2021 Review: “Neapolitan influences are evident in the choice of ingredients, and the wood-burning oven makes for good, chewy, charred crusts, unlike most high-street pizzas” – so say fans of this global chain, whose HQ is indeed in Naples. Not everyone is impressed, though, and ratings are dragged down by those who feel it’s merely an “everyday” choice: “OK for a bog-standard group, but not great”.

2022 Review: “Great pizza in a cycle-themed restaurant”, alongside high-energy breakfast and brunch, washed down by decent coffee, fuel the peloton that passes through Putney on the way to and from Richmond Park – “what’s not to like?”. The branch in Balham closed down in 2020.

2023 Review: “Really good and very Italian pizza” emerges from the oven at this “somewhat basic” pizzeria in the “lovely surroundings” of Wandsworth Common’s foodie Bellevue Parade, where neighbours include Chez Bruce.

“Excellent Neapolitan sourdough pizza” has carved a legendary reputation for Andrea Asciuti’s cult Streatham pitstop, to which aficionados journey from far and wide. He also runs 081 Pizzeria – see also.

“Engaging service” is the strong suit at this “solid neighbourhood Italian” that has been a fixture on Clapham’s Northcote Road for many years. The menu offers “no surprises”, but the cooking is “more than adequate”.

Now 30 years old, this battered Battersea Neapolitan helped introduce the capital to the delights of pizza sold by the metre. Others, perhaps, have overtaken it over the decades, but for a good laugh and some very decent pizza, it still has a fan club.

“The pizza is phenomenal” – “always tasty, with fresh ingredients well cooked” – at this popular Ealing independent, whose offerings are named after Neapolitan heroes ranging from Maradona to Bud Spencer (the spaghetti western actor born Carlo Pedersoli in Naples).

2022 Review: A “lovely local” near Turnham Green, this “family-owned Italian” is “tiny but with terrific food and atmosphere”. There’s a good range of pizzas but the Puglian dishes are what makes it special.

2023 Review: “Always fresh sourdough pizza” has helped build a strong local following for this hip southeast London group, with outlets in Crystal Palace, Nunhead, West Norwood, Herne Hill and Elephant & Castle. A new natural wine selection from specialist importer Les Caves de Pyrène is now available alongside the craft beers on tap. Top Tip – “make sure you leave room for the ice cream”.

“Glorious-tasting authentic Neapolitan pizza”, “with interesting toppings that are quite unique”, is the USP of this Ealing-based operation launched in 2010 by Naples-born duo Angelo and Pasquale, which has grown in recent years into a small group with outlets as far away as Islington and Fitzrovia. Their “aim is to transport you to Naples, and the pizzas live up to the ambition”.

“A true find” – jazz bassist Tim Thornton’s lockdown pizza project-gone-permanent goes from strength to strength, serving “top sourdough pizzas” at his original pizzeria on King Street in Hammersmith and a more recent addition across the river in Barnes. “Lovely staff and a great atmosphere” add to the package.

“Top-notch pizza” of the wood-fired Neapolitan variety “and beer from the local brewery opposite” combine to form a winning formula at brothers Paolo and Luca’s crowd-pleasing venture, which began life as a market food truck in 2017. In addition to a bigger Horsham branch, you can also get their pizzas (limited hours only) at The Hatch pub in Redhill.

“Delicious thin-crust pizzas” win consistently high ratings for this 10-strong chain across north, east and south London. They are a socially conscious bunch who contributed 8,000 meals to NHS staff during the pandemic.
