British, Modern Restaurants in Hastings
1. The Crown Hastings
British, Modern restaurant in Hastings
64 - 66 All Saints Street - TN34
In the Old Town, near the seafront – “a short walk from the Hastings Contemporary gallery” – this “absolute favourite pub” is “a community hub that’s a true asset to the area”. “Not only is it the ultimate pub, with its vibe, location, and friendliness” but “the food’s a cut above your normal pub grub” and “they always have a banging range of ales on draft, interesting cans in the fridge, and fun soft drinks too”. “The atmosphere is lovely with all the local art on the walls”. Top Menu Tip – “Aubergine curry with spicy garnishes was flavourful; ciabatta fish goujon sandwich with wedge chips is if anything too generous!”
2. Rock a Nore Kitchen
British, Modern restaurant in Hastings
23a Rock-A-Nore Rd - TN34
A “totally unpretentious” venture serving “lovely, simple seafood, cooked well and at a decent price, in a little shack of a dining room down on the Hastings seafront”, and where the catch is, reassuringly, “landed on the beach just opposite”. Add in “lovely relaxed service” and is a “really enjoyable” formula all-round.
3. The Royal
British, Modern restaurant in St Leonards-on-Sea
1 Saint Johns Road - TN37
This “satisfying haunt” – a smartly renovated Victorian hotel opposite the station – attracts a “relaxed regular clientele” with a “solid-if-limited menu on weekday lunchtimes, but more varied and flavourful choice in the evening”.
4. St Clement’s
British, Modern restaurant in St Leonards-on-Sea
3 Mercatoria - TN38
Former Le Caprice chef Nick Hales this year celebrates 21 years at his townhouse restaurant, where he showcases the daily catch provided by Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet at Hastings – “there are meat dishes, but the fish and seafood is what you should come here for (and I’m not a great fish-eater!)”. All reports suggest its “on top form” currently.
5. The Wild Mushroom
British, Modern restaurant in Westfield
Woodgate House, Westfield Lane - TN35
“Paul Webbe’s original restaurant is still a pleasure to visit” almost three decades after opening, the farmhouse venue having since spawned a clutch of fish-centric spin-offs alongside a cookery school in Hastings. “Reliably old-fashioned (in the best possible way)”, it combines “superb service and some first-rate cooking” which, as per the name, is focussed on foraging, including “a marvellous set luncheon with a very large choice for each course at a reasonable price in this day and age”. For several reporters this is a place to “go back to on special occasions as the quality is very good”.
6. Tillingham
British, Modern restaurant in Peasmarsh
Dew Farm, Dew Lane - TN31
The “delightful dining room” with “friendly service” at former Gusbourne boss Ben Walgate’s biodynamic wine estate is just the place for a “truly memorable special occasion”, whether it’s a “superb relaxed lunch” or a “delicious celebratory dinner” (“we went on my wife’s birthday”) – while you’re there, you can “enjoy an entertaining wine tour” or stay overnight in “a really lovely room”.
7. Mermaid
British, Modern restaurant in Rye
Mermaid St - TN31
2024 Review: The “historic location” (a 600-year-old building with mullioned windows and many a beam) certainly adds to the charms of this old smugglers’ inn – “a little old-school, but that’s all part of the experience”. It’s been under the same owners for three decades, and while it’s not the main draw, the “lovely food” also has its fans.
8. Landgate Bistro
British, Modern restaurant in Rye
5 - 6 Landgate - TN31
Set in a row of Georgian shops, Martin Peacock’s neighbourhood bistro (est. 2010) has become a real beacon for locals and visitors alike (“our trips to Rye are worked round whether we can get a table here”). On the menu, local Romney Marsh lamb or “super-fresh” fish landed a few hundred metres away (including the gurnard which lends its tail to their logo) are cooked in a pleasingly unfussy way, all at “reasonable prices”.
9. The Globe Inn Marsh
British, Modern restaurant in Rye
10 Military Road - TN31
2023 Review: “If only every pub was like this!” – “a quirky place” a short walk from the town centre which makes the most of its olde-worlde decor. The food is “competent and innovative”, and there’s a “good range of drinks”.
10. The Gallivant
British, Modern restaurant in Camber
New Lydd Rd - TN31
This increasingly fashionable adults-only wellness retreat in a converted 1960s motel behind Camber Sands serves ambitious and “interesting” menus from MasterChef contestant Nico Fitzgerald, accompanied by what is said to be the biggest selection of English wines in the country.
11. The Mirabelle, The Grand Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Eastbourne
King Edwards Parade - BN21
Dining amid the Edwardian “time-warp” splendour of the Grand Hotel is “always a wonderful experience” according to traditionalist fans of this seafront landmark, which “continues to sail along offering well spaced tables, attentive silver service”. One or two reports regret that in moving with the times it’s become “sadly less stylish than in times past, with no serving cloche or pianist on the night visited”, but all acknowledge it’s “still a lovely room”, with “imaginative cuisine” from chef Alex Burtenshaw – cooking that all reports acknowledged as consistent this year.
12. The Cove
British, Modern restaurant in Fairlight
53 Waites Lane - TN35
This black-painted wooden pub, reminiscent of one of the net huts in nearby Hastings, had lived many lives (cowshed, hotel, potential care home) before couple Olivia & Henry took it over in 2022. The kitchen turns out “lovely food that’s more than just pub grub”, taking the seasonal route and giving it a Sussex spin.
13. The Union Rye
British, Modern restaurant in Rye
8 East Street - TN31
“Top-quality small plates” based around seasonal ingredients from local suppliers are to be found in this quaint 15th-century former pub that “seems to improve with each visit” – it’s hidden away down a cobbled lane off the main drag in this attractive seaside town.
14. Water Lane
British, Modern restaurant in Hawkhurst
Water Lane - TN18
“Home-grown seasonal produce” means meals “as fresh as food can get” at this daytime café-restaurant (plus dinner on Friday & Saturday) at a long-term project, the restoration of a Victorian walled garden in the High Weald using organic no-dig methods. It makes a “super setting” for lunch or a “slice of lovely cake”.
15. Birchwood
British, Modern restaurant in Ticehurst
Flimwell Park, Hawkhurst Road - TN5
Named after the coppiced woodland upon which it sits – Flimwell Park, an über-modern 46-acre sustainable community – this three-year-old is the third venture for Will Devlin, whose nearby The Small Holding holds a Michelin Green Star. “The standard bearer for excellent, locally sourced food” – small and large plates served in the “well-designed but canteen-style” interior or (preferably) on the stunning terrace overlooking the forest – it’s “pretty unbeatable for a fixed-price lunch”, though they’re also now open until 20.00 on Friday and Saturday night.
