1. Winteringham Fields
British, Modern restaurant in Winteringham
1 Silver St - DN15
“If food is love, there is no better place to feel totally wined and dined!” according to fans of this converted sixteenth-century manor house, near the southern banks of the Humber. As the holder of the only Michelin star in North Lincs, it has long been a culinary beacon in this thinly provided neck of the woods and won particular praise this year for “a tasting menu that’s second to none… and the fact that you can stay over too for the perfect date!”. “Really interesting wines from some unusual locations” is another feature that attracts praise. Overall, the establishment’s ratings were dragged down a little this year by a couple of “average” or “overpriced” meals. But, in April 2023 – late in the day for feedback in our annual diners’ poll – the restaurant relaunched with ‘a new immersive experience’ that promises to be ‘like nothing you’ve experienced before’ (‘by knocking through walls and incorporating our kitchen into the restaurant itself, you can [apparently] taste, smell and fully immerse yourself in an unrivaled restaurant experience’). We’ve maintained the former ratings but they are less certain than usual at this time of change.
2. Thieving Harry's
Burgers, etc restaurant in Hull
73 Humber Place - HU1
2022 Review: “Amazing breakfast” and “great coffee” keep the regulars coming back to this all-day café “with gorgeous views of Hull Marina”. “The chairs are a bit on the wonky side, but that definitely adds some quirky charm”. Top tip: “the chorizo ragu with fried eggs”.
3. Tapasya @ Marina
Indian restaurant in Hull
Humber Dock Street, Marina, - HU1
2023 Review: “Good food overlooking the marina” is reported in all accounts of this swish contemporary Indian. Even someone who feels its expensive-looking styling is “all a bit too grand for its own good” says “the food is well cooked and comes in generous portions”.
4. The Hope & Anchor
British, Traditional restaurant in South Ferriby
Sluice Road - DN18
This capacious boozer-with-rooms near the Humber Bridge has a “great atmosphere” and estuary views. On the food front, their original British cooking embraces the zero-waste approach, with greens foraged in Broughton Woods, and meats (even fancy Wagyu) aged in a glass-front drying cabinet, before finishing in the trendy Josper oven.
5. Ogino
Japanese restaurant in Beverley
1st floor Beaver House, Butcher Row - HU17
2022 Review: “Vaut le voyage!” – Julian & Rieko Ognio-Stamford's smart Japanese first-floor dining room is something of a rarity in these parts, turning out “exceptional fresh sushi” and sashimi, alongside “generous portions” of “cuisine with a Yorkshire twist” (think pork loin and beef).
6. Cerutti ‘2’
British, Modern restaurant in Beverley
Station Square - HU17
2023 Review: This “very good fish restaurant backing on Beverley railway station” (it occupies the old waiting room) was opened by chef-owner Tina Cerutti in 1989; she still runs it with her brother Tony, who closed the Hull branch in 2019. With roots in southern Italy, the family have been a fixture of the Yorkshire dining scene for 65 years.
7. Whites
British, Modern restaurant in Beverley
12-12a North Bar Without - HU17
2022 Review: John Robinson’s restaurant-with-rooms again wins very consistent support, especially from local fans of its “amazing and fresh-tasting menus”: a four-course menu for £35, or a nine- course taster for £65. He took the opportunity of lockdown to give the place a significant refurb – new kitchen, new dining room, new garden…
8. The Westwood Restaurant
British, Modern restaurant in Beverley
New Walk - HU17
A Grade II-listed Georgian courthouse is the setting for siblings Michele (FOH) and Matt (chef) Barker’s long-running restaurant (est. 2007), whose “fantastic” locally sourced British cooking and appealing atmosphere make it “great for business, romance or lunch” (not least the “really good” set lunch in the case of the latter).
9. The Star Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Sancton
King St - YO43
2023 Review: A meal at this former coaching inn in the East Yorkshire Wolds is by most accounts “a delightful experience, with many firm pub grub favourites” on the menu. There are “frequently changing seasonal items and specials” and a “great-value Sunday lunch”, all provided with “excellent service and good hospitality”.
10. The Pipe & Glass
British, Modern restaurant in South Dalton
West End - HU17
“Always-excellent food in beautiful, quaint surroundings” has made James & Kate Mackenzie’s former coaching inn a real East Yorkshire destination for almost 20 years – “and everyone is so friendly”. There’s “no tasting menu, but with such good options amongst the selection of dishes, that makes a refreshing change”. Top Tip – with seven boutique bedrooms, it’s “a great place to stay because the breakfast is amazing: five or so choices of fish for breakfast, most places you’d be lucky to get one!”.
