3. Sindhu
Indian restaurant in Marlow
The Compleat Angler - SL7
“The big ol’ Compleat Angler hotel might be thought a bit dated but I rather love it, right on the bank of the Thames at Marlow”. This “pretty dining room” is right over the water and is “one of Atul Kochhar’s finest” with “excellent customer service” and “delicate and finely cooked dishes”.
4. Hawkyns by Atul Kochhar
Indian restaurant in Amersham
16 High Street - HP7
On the surprisingly picturesque (for the inner Home Counties) high street, a 16th-century pub where Hugh first kissed Andie in ‘Four Weddings’ – and where starry chef Atul Kochhar now delivers “outstanding” and upscale Indian food. The latter ranges far beyond the usual suspects, with ‘British Indian’ dishes tapping ingredients like Hertfordshire venison and grilled Lake District lamb – and with particularly good value set menus also part of the attraction.
5. Vaasu by Atul Kochhar
Indian restaurant in Marlow
2 Chapel Street - SL7
“An excellent take on Indian cuisine with a blend of classic dishes and spiced modern British versions” – Atul Kochhar’s “interesting” cuisine at this four-year-old venture is inspired by the cuisines of Punjab and Rajasthan. Some fans still suggest it “just edges Sindhu, its nearby sister in Marlow” but its ratings were undercut this year by a couple of mixed reports.
6. Maliks
Indian restaurant in Cookham
High St - SL6
2023 Review: “Every dish is fresh and authentic” at this comfortable curry house which occupies a half-timbered building on the high street, and which has become well-known over many years for its superior Indian cuisine. Heston is a fan.
7. Maliks
Indian restaurant in Gerrards Cross
14 Oak End Way - SL9
Malik Ahmed’s traditional but “exceptional” curry house has achieved consistently high ratings for more than 20 years. Part of a trio with siblings in Cookham and Marlow, it’s run hands-on by a family with 150 years in the business – the restaurant Malik’s great-great-grandfather founded in what is now Bangladesh is still going strong!
8. Riwaz by Atul Kochhar
Indian restaurant in Beaconsfield
41 Aylesbury End - HP9
It has a star chef’s name over the door, but feedback was inconsistent this year regarding this outpost of Atul Kochhar’s empire of Indian restaurants. Amongst reports, one diner described dishes as plain “bizarre” and another who felt the “food is OK” added, “but it’s not worth the price and overall seems overhyped”.
9. Clay’s Hyderabadi Kitchen
Indian restaurant in Caversham
22-24 Prospect Street - RG4
“Absolutely superb!” – Nandana & Sharat Syamala have earned an enviable reputation for “fresh and exceptional regional Indian cuisine” that reflects their backgrounds in Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh (“loads of dishes I’ve never tried before and really wanted to eat!)”. After five years, they moved into new premises in neighbouring Caversham in 2024. Top Menu Tip – “bhuna venison: mic drop. Glad for once I live in Reading”.
