International Restaurants in North Yorkshire
1. The Angel
British, Modern restaurant in Hetton
“Consistently now one of the best restaurants in the North of England” – Michael Wignall took over this long-celebrated pub in 2018 after it had spent many years in the doldrums and – as well as giving it a “pared back” Nordic-style refit – has re-established it as one of the stronger performers in our annual diners’ poll (and one of the top-40 most commented-on outside London). “Success has followed him from all his previous restaurants”, and he “has continued to refine his tasting menus and to elevate the whole dine-and-stay experience – a second Michelin star must be close”. At dinner, he offers a five-course tasting menu for £120 per person or a ten-course version for £170 per person. If you order it in advance when you book, there is a cheaper lunchtime ‘Taste of the Season Menu’ for £75 per person. “The food is local and seasonal as you would expect and his deft touch brings out the best of his ingredients”. (“One of the few places where I would pay to stay overnight for a meal… yes, that good!”). Top Menu Tip – “cheese custard with truffles… on my!”
2. Origin Social
Fusion restaurant in Northallerton
2 Friarage Street - DL6
“A breath of fresh air for Northallerton” – this casual, modern bar/bistro brings with it a contemporary formula of small plates cooked over a coal-fired grill. “It’s great food from a menu that changes regularly, the staff are always really friendly and attentive and there’s a great drinks selection”.
3. The Dawnay Arms
International restaurant in Newton On Ouse
2023 Review: “Whilst walking in the area, dropped in for lunch without prior knowledge – what a gem!". Kerry & Martel Smith’s rustic gastropub by the River Ouse, is consistently well rated. “The ambience and friendly welcome make it immediately a winner and that’s cemented with the tremendous cuisine”.
4. Mannion & Co
British, Modern restaurant in York
1 Blake St - YO1
The Mannion clan first opened this venue as a greengrocers’ three decades ago; its current incarnation is as a “charming café-deli that consistently delivers on quality, atmosphere and indulgence” (be it Full English breakfasts or pork belly sandwiches), and offers “very efficient and friendly” service to boot. There’s also a sibling in Helmsley (the Easingwold spin-off having closed in summer 2025).
5. The Blue Barbakan
Polish restaurant in York
34 Fossgate - YO1
2024 Review: An “excellent” Polish restaurant (also drawing on wider European influences) that is “doing well in its enlarged setting” in Fossgate – having swapped its former Walmgate home for the old premises of the Blue Bicycle in 2020 (and having added blue to its name in tribute). Top Tip – “go hungry as the portions (of pierogi, stews, etc.) are huge, hearty and tasty”, and you may then be “too full to try the excellent-looking selection of cakes”.
6. Kino
International restaurant in Leeds
34 New Briggate - LS1
2024 Review: Attached to the Grand Theatre of Opera North, this brasserie makes for a “very handy new addition to the Leeds dining scene, especially if you’re going to a show at the Grand”. While it was initially dedicated to extended residencies from small food businesses they appear to have changed tack, with former MasterChef: The Professionals semi-finalist Josh Whitehead appointed head chef in May 2023. Here’s hoping that it doesn’t lose its initial momentum.
