Fish & Seafood Restaurants in Sandsend
1. The Magpie Café
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitby
14 Pier Rd - YO21
“An annual trip over the moors to this friendly legend serving the freshest of fish” is a regular treat for many in our annual diners’ poll who brave the “steep steps” up to the door for the “best fish ’n’ chips in the world”. “There’s strong competition in Whitby but the Magpie is always a winner” and it is not only one of the top-50 most mentioned places outside London in our annual diners’ poll, but also the most commented-on vendor of the national dish. “Been going for 40 years… it’s as good as ever!”. Top Menu Tip – “Although almost everyone seems to go for the excellent fish ’n’ chips options (portions so large that doggy bags were being used)” the “specials board is especially good” – “exceptional seafood carbonara, full of an interesting range of seafood and delicately seasoned sauce. The Monkfish & King Prawn with spicy couscous was also amazing”.
2. Estbek House
Fish & seafood restaurant in Sandsend
East Row - YO21
“Outstanding fresh seafood and great New World wines” are the highlights of this Regency-era restaurant-with-rooms in a village near Whitby – Tim Lawrence “is an excellent fish chef”, while his co-owner David Cross presides over a wine list that “always has something new and interesting”. Each setting in the “calm” and somewhat formal dining room has a black napkin folded into the shape of a dinner jacket.
3. Trenchers
Fish & chips restaurant in Whitby
New Quay Rd - YO21
“We’ve been dining at this traditional fish’n’chips restaurant since it opened 46 years ago, and think it’s better than Magpie!” – this nearby rival to Britain’s best chippy has a highly dedicated if smaller fan base who continue to rate it highly. It has two spin-offs in Whitley Bay, in the revamped 1910 landmark Spanish City and the bistro-style Tide by Trenchers – where “as you’d expect, the fish dishes reign supreme”.
