British, Modern Restaurants in St Leonards
1. Cambium
British, Modern restaurant in Brockenhurst
Lyndhurst Rd - SO42
2023 Review: ‘Dylan James’s dishes pay homage to the British countryside, and embrace the nature of the seasons’ – well that’s what the website says! – at this “lovely restaurant in a beautiful hotel”: a New Forest destination that started life as a royal hunting lodge and is nowadays a luxurious spa complex. Reports in our annual diners’ poll agree, all of them applauding its attractive, light interior and brasserie food from an all-day menu that’s “carefully cooked, and good value”.
3. Thirteen
British, Modern restaurant in Poole
222 Ashley Road - BH14
It’s a family affair this highly promising two-year-old, showcasing the accomplished cuisine of chef Alex Naik, aided by his sister Frances and their parents and co-owners Hem and Elisabeth. “The team are very passionate about what they do and it shows in the tasty and thoughtful cooking”, which is part of a 13-course experience for £115 per person, or via a 6.5 plate lunchtime and weekday selection (for £75 per person), with Sunday lunch a la carte. “Chefs bring dishes to the table and talk you through their construction. Highly recommended!”
4. Arbor Restaurant, The Green House Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Bournemouth
4 Grove Rd - BH1
For a decent meal or afternoon tea, this seaside hotel is worth considering thanks to its large array of menu options and very dependable food, overseen by chef Andy Hilton.
5. The Jetty
British, Modern restaurant in Christchurch
95 Mudeford - BH23
“What a location! In summer, one could be beside the Med’ when lucky enough to be at one of the outside tables” at this “wonderful harbourside location” with “lovely views over the water” from “the grounds of the Christchurch Harbour Hotel, whose food offer is also in on the capable hands of Alex Aitken”. “This location feels like Alex’s first love – a cut above other ‘Harbour’ outlets including the one on the same site”. “Locally-landed fish is a speciality” and “the food like the atmosphere echoes the best of the Med (and UK)”. “The menu is not scared to change but the focus on seafood remains at its core”. “Deservedly popular: inside can be packed and at times cacophonous" (especially when parents are there with kids in tow)… “and finding a place to park can seem all but impossible”.
6. The Three Lions
British, Modern restaurant in Stuckton
Stuckton Rd - SP6
2022 Review: “Amazing food and friendly service” characterise this “impressive” restaurant on the edge of the New Forest, run for more than 20 years by chef Mike Womersley (ex-Lucknam Park) and his wife Jayne. “The ambience has been transformed by a refurbishment – a welcome surprise since our last visit”.
7. Captain’s Club Hotel & Spa
British, Modern restaurant in Christchurch
Wick Ferry, Wick Lane - BH23
“Waterside dining with a great buzz” makes this nautically themed spa hotel (built 20 years ago on the site of a former Pontin’s) an “attractive” option (“we’re regular visitors, and have never been disappointed by the cooking”). The hotel, which resembles a cruise liner overlooking the River Stour and the harbour, is doubling its capacity under expansion plans approved in early 2025.
8. Restaurant Roots
British, Modern restaurant in Southbourne
141 Belle Vue Road - BH6
“So pleased to see Jan and Stacey’s excellence recognised!” – the Bretschneiders have operated out of this address a couple of minutes’ stroll from the promenade in Southbourne for over ten years now and it’s “a go-to when in the area” for those in our annual diners’ poll. Despite its looks, it’s “too expensive to be called a neighbourhood restaurant” which wouldn’t do justice to the ambition of its multi-course modern European menus, which are an attractive mix of classical and contemporary dishes (with ‘South Coast Sushi’ rubbing shoulders with ‘Creedy Carver Chicken’ and ‘Pear Belle Helene’). There’s a ‘Classic Menu’ (currently £99 per person) or ‘Discovery’ (at £139 per person).
9. The Kitchen at Chewton Glen
British, Modern restaurant in New Milton
Chewton Farm Road - BH23
“Such a fun place that coped so well with a mixed-age group of ten people” – the ‘dressed down’ option at this famous country-house hotel occupies a contemporary, pitched-roof space overlooking the kitchen gardens and complete with outside terrace and cookery school. The brasserie menu includes burgers, pizza, steak and other grills, plus a good selection of other options; and reports say “it’s just really good food backed up by friendly, informal but efficient service in a convivial environment”. Not cheap perhaps, but “well worth the price”.
10. Chewton Glen
British, Modern restaurant in New Milton
Chewton Glen Rd - BH23
“A classic afternoon tea with exceptional service” is one reliable attraction at this famous, cossetting Relais & Châteaux property, set on the edge of the New Forest about half an hour’s drive from Bournemouth. Dinner in its light-filled dining room does afford the possibility of a six-course tasting option (for £98.50 per person) but the main thrust is an à la carte selection of individually priced dishes, with lots of relatively straightforward steaks and other grills (of fish, lobster, lamb and so on). Feedback suggests it’s all very pleasing if not in a particularly ‘foodie’ mould.
11. Branksome Beach
British, Modern restaurant in Poole
Pinecliff Rd - BH13
2022 Review: A “beautifully situated restaurant” in an Art Deco solarium overlooking Poole Harbour, and where “drinks on the upper deck are an extra delight”. One or two off reports on the food front this year, but also plenty of plaudits for its “really good breakfasts and lunches”, and “service has improved” of late too.
12. Harbour Heights Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Poole
73 Haven Rd, Haven Rd - BH13
“The view overlooking Poole Harbour makes this a romantic location” for an Italian meal – although it’s “very much a good-weather venue”. The hotel is at the heart of a long-running planning dispute, with vocal locals opposing a plan to convert it into an ‘aparthotel’ under a £300m redevelopment of Sandbanks.
13. Pebble Beach
French restaurant in Barton-on-Sea
Marine Drive - BH25
“Fresh local fish” is the star turn at this beachside restaurant – in “an excellent location with wonderful coastal views on a good day”. Chef Andy Waters worked under the great French chef Paul Bocuse early in his career. Top Tip – “they also serve an exceptional breakfast”.
14. The Museum Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Farnham
2023 Review: This “brilliant thatched country pub” has “lots of game dishes” on its menu – appropriately enough for a traditional establishment in the historical hunting landscape of Cranborne Chase. “Vegetarians and vegans are well provided for” too, while there’s also a “well-stocked bar with local ales and a reasonably priced wine list”.
15. Verveine Fishmarket Restaurant
British, Modern restaurant in Milford-on-Sea
98 High St - SO41
“As weird and wacky as ever: a top-class restaurant tucked away where no one would ever look for one… in the back of a fishmonger’s” – chef David Wykes, who cooks every service, has established his “delightful and unique” venue as one of the country’s leading fish and seafood specialists in the last 15 years (“I’ve been to lots of restaurants in Cornwall this year but a return visit to Verveine has reinforced its place as my favourite for fish, combining wonderful freshness with imaginative accompaniments and seasoning – and excellent desserts too – all at very reasonable prices”). “Chef David is so creative, always unveiling new ingredients, with each dish so well balanced in terms of composition and flavour, while Sally’s wine pairings are also excellent”. The “decor doesn’t quite match the extremely high calibre of food” and the space can feel “quite cramped” – but nobody is complaining when there’s “a range of tasting menus including a very reasonable six courses at lunchtime for £43 (but I’m yet to try it as the £29 three-course lunch is so good!)”.
16. The Pig
British, Modern restaurant in Brockenhurst
Beaulieu Road - SO42
The “idyllic New Forest location” is the big draw at the original Pig, where Robin & Judy Hutson set the template for their shabby-chic country-house hotel group that had grown to 11 branches by the time they stepped back into retirement at the end of 2024. The “food is perhaps not quite as adventurous as it used to be”, but its basic premise of “fresh local produce, cooked perfectly” still passes muster for most reporters. Black marks, though, for some “poorly trained staff” and “seriously overpriced wines”.
17. Samphire at Stanwell House
British, Modern restaurant in Lymington
14-15 High Street - SO41
This two-year-old restaurant in a “boutique hotel on the main street of Lymington” specialises in “simply prepared and beautifully presented fish, straight from the local boats”. Experienced chef Matthew Tomkinson, previously of The Hambrough on the Isle of Wight, took over the kitchen in early 2024.
18. Elderflower
British, Modern restaurant in Lymington
4-5 Quay St - SO41
“A really lovely restaurant that’s a real find in Lymington” – Andrew and Marjolaine Du Bourg have run this fine dining venue near the harbour since 2014 and all reports suggest that “if you want to celebrate a special occasion, or just have a self-indulgent dining experience, then Elderflower is the place to come”. It’s a consciously ‘haute’ experience, where there are four, five and seven-course modern British tasting menus for £85, £95 and £105 per person with “interesting and flavourful ingredient combinations, beautifully presented” – “Michelin star level food without the fuss and extra expense”. “The staff (a young team) are all pleasant and professional” too.
19. Old Harry Rocks Bar & Restaurant
British, Traditional restaurant in Bournemouth
West Hill Road - BH2
“Brilliant new restaurant” at the Nici hotel – a £25million Miami-style reboot of the old Savoy hotel at the top of West Cliff – with “superb cocktails and staff on point”. There is the odd report of teething troubles, despite the “great location”, but even ‘off’ reports say “the staff and ambience are lovely”.
20. The Cliff in Poole
British, Modern restaurant in Sandbanks
6 Ravine Road - BH13
2023 Review: This “nice gastropub with large gardens” has undergone a dramatic £800,000 refurb since our annual diners’ poll, to be reborn with cocktail bar-style décor replacing the traditional pub interior, and fitted seating with cushions in the 100-seater garden. The new menu replaces standard 3-course meals with a globally inspired selection of small plates.
