1. Marc-Pierre's Kitchen
Fish & seafood restaurant in Ramsgate
4 - 5 West Cliff Arcade - CT11

2. Wheelers Oyster Bar
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
8 High Street - CT5
Sole and much-loved survivor of a long-lost chain, the first ever Wheeler’s (est. 1856) is still going strong in these “tiny” and adorably quaint premises. They don’t just deliver “excellent oysters (some with a Japanese spin) but fabulous fish dishes” too, including those parlayed through the excellent tasting menu. Add in the reasonable prices (you can BYO for a small corkage fee, and there’s an offy – literally ‘The Offy’, opposite) and “booking is a must” – though if you can’t bag a table you can always take the mollusc party away with you to enjoy on the beach.
3. Pearson’s Arms
British, Traditional restaurant in Whitstable
The Horsebridge, Sea Wall - CT5
2023 Review: The dining room “upstairs in a rickety old pub, with wonderful views over Whitstable Bay”, offers a “good mix of innovative food” – including “beautifully cooked fish” – “and homemade pub classics, served by staff from the kitchen on the floor below”. “Eaten there many times: the ambience is excellent and always found the food good”.
4. Whitstable Oyster Fishery Co.
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
Royal Native Oyster Stores, Horsebridge - CT5
“A Whitstable jewel!” – “You can taste the sea in every dish of oysters, mussels, sole or plaice” which are the hallmarks of this landmark operation in a “fantastic location on the beach”. “The ambience is open, friendly and serious about food”, although “service can be a bit hit and miss” when it’s busy – which it very often is. Top Menu Tip – “even the desserts are good”.
5. Crab & Winkle
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
South Quay, Whitstable Harbour - CT5
2022 Review: “Superb, ultra-fresh seafood, including excellent Whitstable oysters” can be enjoyed bang in front of the working harbour at this straightforward café and terrace, with views over the sea as a backdrop.
6. The Lobster Shack Restaurant
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
East Quay - CT5
Operated by the Whitstable Oyster Company, this shack tucked away at the end of the harbour serves oysters from the beds visible at low tide from its terrace, as well as lobsters and fish from the nearby waters. “We’re lucky to have such a place for fresh quality fish on our doorstep”.
7. The Sportsman
British, Modern restaurant in Seasalter
Faversham Road - CT5
“Bravo!” – “Everything always seems to work so well at Stephen Harris’s exceptionally popular spot in the north Kent marshes”. It’s one of the top-20 most commented-on destinations in our annual diners’ poll and also one of the best liked, inspiring nothing but the most enthusiastic comments from diners. “The ideal thing to do is take a good walk along the beach beforehand to get the appetite brimming with anticipation”. Thereafter, “it’s the combination of relaxed atmosphere and stellar cooking that makes for an unforgettable visit”. It helps that “nowhere in London can get close to the sort of quality vs price ratio here”, even though there’s no longer an à la carte option and the only choice now is the “memorable five-course tasting menu” for “£80 per person”: “food that’s exquisite and beautifully presented, not at all ostentatious”. “You really feel that everything is thoughtfully and lovingly prepared and the service is always with a smile”. “The rooms are pretty excellent too”. Top Menu Top – “superb local produce – Whitstable oysters, saltmarsh lamb, seaweed buttered slip sole – are cleverly accompanied by delicacies from further afield, such as Lobster, Old Winchester cheese, or Avruga Caviar. The wine list, personally selected by the host, is composed of classic quality wines, so generously priced, they constitute the best quality to value ratio I have seen in a British restaurant”. (“It’s been my favourite restaurant anywhere in the UK, and even further afield, for the past 20 years and I feel blessed that it is only a few miles along the coast from where I live”).
8. The Three Mariners
British, Modern restaurant in Oare
2 Church Rd - ME13
This Grade II listed Georgian pub near Oare Marshes Nature Reserve is “a lovely spot on a warm day to sit and enjoy lovely grub on the outdoor terraces” – “while it does not outshine its near neighbour The Sportsman, it’s cosy, well run, with excellent food and great service – all without having to book weeks in advance and much easier on the wallet”. It has seen “a resurgence in the standard of cooking under new management” – experienced ex-Londoners Tom Gravett & Renny Peret.
9. Frog & Scot
Fish & seafood restaurant in Deal
86 High Street - CT14
2023 Review: This “fantastic little bistro hidden away in Deal” is “well worth trying” for the “very high standard of its classic French cooking” – although there is some pushback against its “London prices”. Owner-operators Benoit & Sarah (respectively the Frog and the Scot) also run Le Pinardier wine shop and bar a few doors away.
10. Rocksalt
Fish & seafood restaurant in Folkestone
4-5 Fishmarket - CT19
For “brilliant fish” in a “stunning setting by the harbour”, look no further than this curved modern restaurant – opened in 2011 by Sir Roger De Haan, Saga billionaire and Folkestone philanthropist – which has by all accounts recovered from a blip in standards when founding chef Mark Sargeant left a couple of year ago. New head chef Akos Mate’s “delicious” food makes it a “seaside restaurant to seal that deal – business conversations are not distracted but enhanced by the professionalism of the service”. There’s a new upstairs wine bar with its own menu, including a strong oyster selection.
11. Buoy & Oyster
Fish & seafood restaurant in Margate
44 High Street - CT9
“Varied and well prepared seafood” is the “pleasing” proposition at this ten-year-old venue with “excellent views of Margate sands” – “cocktails are lovely on the terrace while watching the sunset”. Founders Nadine & Simon Morriss also “look after those who are not into fish”, and have launched a nearby spin-off street-food spot, Beach Buoys. Top Menu Tip – “monkfish curry is recommended”.
12. Dory's
Fish & seafood restaurant in Margate
24 High Street - CT9
“Our go-to for a tasty bite in Margate”; the “fun” younger sibling of restaurant-with-rooms Angela’s, round the corner, “punches above its weight” by all accounts, turning out “excellent” small-ish plates based on the day’s catch (often delivered raw, cured or pickled) plus vegetables from their co-op (they also have a shop stocking biodynamic wines).
13. Angela's
Fish & seafood restaurant in Margate
21 The Parade - CT9
“A tiny marvel in Margate” with “tables outside to extend it in better weather”. “If you like fish in all its various incarnations, then please please visit! At first glance it looks slightly crammed in… that’s because it is!… it’s a small building and they clearly need to fit as many tables in as they can”. But fans say that “rather than being off-putting, this just adds to its charm”. “Fabulous locally caught super-fresh fish is served alongside the most delicious vegetables and herbs ever: who knew courgette could taste like that?!” “Staff competently and charmingly squeeze their way through to deliver dishes that vary seasonally”. “The freshest of fish dishes are the best… kept simple and treated with respect. How they get that out of the tiny kitchen is amazing!”
14. Little Ships
British, Modern restaurant in Ramsgate
54-56 Harbour Parade - CT11
2022 Review: In a “great” harbourside setting, chef Craig Mather’s collaboration with hotelier James Thomas namechecks the heroic homespun flotilla of the Dunkirk evacuation, also echoed in the decor. The food, mostly sourced within 30 miles of the restaurant, is reliably “solid”, not least the “lovely fresh catch of the day with interesting saucing”.
15. The London & Paris
Fish & seafood restaurant in Central Folkestone
13 - 15 Rendezvous Street - CT20
Close the harbour, a Victorian hotel dining room with a modern seafood-based menu and specials board which impressed critic Grace Dent of the Guardian.
16. Little Rock
Fish & seafood restaurant in Folkestone
Folkstone Harbour - CT20
2023 Review: This “very buzzy spot in a pink container on the harbour arm” serves “very fresh fish and seafood”, and is the “sister restaurant to Rocksalt”. “Spilling out onto a terrace, it makes a delightful spot for lunch in the sun, with engaging service and all that one wants from a decent fish restaurant”.
