Fish & Seafood Restaurants in Suffolk
1. Maison Bleue
French restaurant in Bury St Edmunds
30-31 Churchgate St - IP33
“A classic in the food capital of East Anglia” – Pascal & Karine Canevet’s “brilliant French destination is a pleasure in every way”. “It’s been open 25 years this year and still the same very high standard with new ideas and menus still coming through”. “It’s a proper restaurant where they not only understand how to put together proper dishes but they can cook them exquisitely”. “Exceptional service too in this classy place. It impresses everyone who goes”. Top Menu Tip – fans declare “the best cheese trolley in the country!”
2. The Mistley Thorn Restaurant & Rooms
British, Modern restaurant in Mistley
High St - CO11
In a very comfortable 18th-century coaching inn, set in the “quaint village of Mistley”, California-bred Sherri Singleton’s neighbourhood restaurant (with rooms, plus a kitchen shop and cookery school) has long been of note for its “great seafood”, which includes “wonderful” grilled options, year-round Mersea oysters and bargain moules-frites nights on Thursdays. One caveat: owing to all the above (plus its great-value set meals and River Stour views) it “gets busy, so you must book”.
3. Shillingfords at The Foragers Retreat
International restaurant in Pebmarsh
The Courtyard - CO10
2022 Review: Carl & Beth Shillingford operate out of these converted former stables nowadays (having moved from art venue, The Quay in Sudbury, a few years ago). Food is served from breakfast and then deli-style throughout the day. On certain weekend evenings they bring back the full ‘Shillingford’s’ experience – providing a seasonal menu with many foraged ingredients. Limited but upbeat feedback – “a rustic-feeling place with good, rustic food”.
4. The Pier at Harwich
Fish & seafood restaurant in Harwich
The Quay - CO12
This small mid-Victorian hotel on the historic Harwich waterfront, overlooking the twin estuaries of the Stour and Orwell, wins solid ratings for its seafood-focused restaurant. It is part of the regional Milsoms’ group (flagship: The Talbooth at Dedham).
5. Butley Orford Oysterage
Fish & seafood restaurant in Orford
Market Hill - IP12
“The menu doesn‘t change much at this venerable restaurant” and “over the years the school dining room feel is just the same” too, but, hey, “if it ain’t broke don‘t fix it” – and this veteran from the Pinney family definitely ain’t broke. On the menu, “fish, either fresh or smoked in their own smokery” and then “simply cooked – perfect”. “After lunch, wander down to their shop on the quay to stock up on oysters, various smoked fish and meats, their own pâtés and more goodies”.
