British, Modern Restaurants in Suffolk
1. The One Bull
British, Modern restaurant in Bury St Edmunds
25 Angel Hill - IP33
“Lovely food, own-brewed beer and wine from their own merchants” helps inspire ongoing good vibes at this “warm, friendly but polished pub”, in the heart of the town, by Abbey Gardens.
2. The Bildeston Crown
British, Modern restaurant in Bildeston
104 High St - IP7
2023 Review: This half-timbered fifteenth-century former coaching inn is a “reliable venue for good food”, with a menu that ticks boxes all the way from basic cheeseburger or beer-battered hake ’n’ chips to more original offerings such as goat cheese doughnut with beetroot sugar and a flexible selection of dishes available in two sizes – as either starters or mains. Top Tip – “the great lobster Caesar salad”.
3. Hintlesham Hall
British, Modern restaurant in Hintlesham
Hintlesham - IP8
“Old fashioned, with understated service and great ambience” – this impressive Grade I listed property dates from 1440 and was once the HQ to 1970s TV chef Robert Carrier, who restored it in the early 1970s. There’s a wide range of à la carte, tasting and afternoon tea menus, all in a traditional mould and all at relatively affordable prices.
4. Leaping Hare Vineyard
British, Modern restaurant in Stanton
Wyken Vineyards - IP31
“What a great find in the middle of Suffolk” – one reporter who visited this “welcoming” outfit in a 400-year-old converted barn amidst the vineyards of the estate “expected an average farm shop experience” only to be “very pleasantly surprised with excellent cooking and a wonderful environment”. The dining room offers modern, locally sourced European cooking – “the set menu is certainly worth a try” and of course “they have their own wines” too (the site’s viticultural history dating back to Roman times). The self-branded ‘creative community’ (indeed, no mere farm shop) also includes a more casual café that was revived in 2024, and a rather beautiful boutique stocking homewares, specialist books and more.
5. The Unruly Pig
British, Modern restaurant in Bromeswell
Orford Rd - IP12
Brendan Padfield’s “fantastic restaurant/pub” has topped Estrella Damm’s Top 50 UK Gastropubs list three times in four years (2022, ’24, ’25), and most reporters agree that “it’s No.1 for a reason”: “I’m lucky enough to have been half a dozen times, and it’s outstanding”; “the best gastropub we’ve experienced, and it really is still a pub!”. The Guardian’s Grace Dent concurred with this view in her January 2025 review, heaping praise on imaginative chef Dave Wall’s ‘go-hard or go-home’ food, perfect for the adventurous diner. But a possibly surprising number of naysayers insist it’s “not quite as good as it thinks it is” – or worse, that it “always manages to disappoint” (“the judges of various awards clearly see something in this fairly ordinary gastropub which I don’t. Having eaten here many times I have been neither disappointed nor impressed”).
6. The Fox & Goose
British, Modern restaurant in Fressingfield
Church Rd - IP21
This “brilliant and deservedly popular” pub – a former guildhall dating from circa 1500 – serves an “interesting menu” from chef-patron Paul Yaxley that is “exceptional value for the quality and service provided (lunch is an absolute steal)”, along with its own beer, ‘Goose Juice’. “The front-of-house has become considerably slicker since the last review”. Top Menu Tip – “duck rillettes with pickled mushrooms, peanut and tamarind flapjack”.
7. 1921 Angel Hill
British, Modern restaurant in Bury St Edmunds
19-21 Angel Hill - IP33
“A fantastic find. A great welcome. A lovely restaurant”. Zack Deakins’s townhouse is “just outside the main town area” and “with so much excellent competition in the area this is often the only good restaurant with any availability at short notice”. All reports are a hymn of praise to its “prompt and personable” service, its “spacious and comfortable” interior, but most particularly to its “accomplished cuisine”: “inventive combinations of flavours, are skilfully and imaginatively executed and presented elegantly but not over-elaborately”. “Loved it!”
8. Pea Porridge
Mediterranean restaurant in Bury St Edmunds
28-29 Cannon St - IP33
In the “foodie wonderland” that is Bury St Edmunds, an “intimate” and “curiously named” restaurant opened by Justin Sharp and FOH wife Jurga, and specialising in Moorish (should that be more-ish?) cuisine. There was the odd sceptic this year, for whom it “lacks the ‘wow’ factor that one might expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant” (Suffolk’s only star, in fact, which they’ve held onto for five years now), but they were vastly outweighed by fans, who proclaim the venue for “interesting and rather eclectic” food that “reaches out to all the senses” and “never fails to delight”. Top Menu Tip – “a venison moussaka, with venison loin and delica pumpkin. Amazing!”
9. The Angel Inn
British, Traditional restaurant in Stoke-by-Nayland
Polstead St - CO6
This “very popular gastropub/hotel in a pretty village” was taken over and lavishly revamped by new owners a few years ago, and “the conversion of an old building is very well done (down to the super WCs!)”, making it a most “attractive” spot for a meal. Chef Matthew Hurry oversees the French-ish cooking, which ranges from fish Fridays to “outstanding” desserts. Reflecting comments in previous surveys, there was praise this year for the “very reasonably priced set menu – £26 for two courses, £34 for three – considering the quality”.
10. The Crown
British, Modern restaurant in Stoke-by-Nayland
Park Street - CO6
2023 Review: In the heart of Constable Country, this gastropub with rooms is “a busy venue with a good atmosphere and friendly service”. Foodwise, it’s praised for cooking that’s “outstanding” at the “very reasonable price”; and wine lovers are well-catered for too, with 250 bins (they also run their own merchants).
11. The Sun Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Dedham
High St - CO7
“Great cooking… a welcoming, warming atmosphere… an ever-changing menu” – there’s plenty to love about this “gorgeous traditional coaching inn” set in prime Constable Country, and with a distinctive yellow façade. There was praise this year for the “well-priced” seafood, as well as the “delightful” service, and it’s “also worth a shout-out to the excellent range of local beers”. Owner Piers Baker, who has shepherded the venue for two decades, is also behind Church Street Tavern in Colchester and, as of 2022, The White Hart Inn on Mersea Island.
12. Le Talbooth
British, Modern restaurant in Dedham
Gun Hill - CO7
A “beautiful setting” on the banks of the River Stour in the unspoilt heart of Constable Country is the making of this well-known half-timbered venue – these days a spa hotel and restaurant owned by East Anglia’s Milsom Hotels group. As is so often the case here, opinion divides sharply on the merits of its cuisine, with some diners enjoying an “excellent meal” with “noteworthy service”, while others complain of “very average and expensive food” and “service which doesn’t live up to its former excellence”. Local superstar Ed Sheeran made a surprise appearance last summer, singing a three-song acoustic set in a marquee on the lawn at the launch of the Lentonbrook Foundation, a new charity to help children and families in Suffolk.
13. The Mistley Thorn Restaurant & Rooms
British, Modern restaurant in Mistley
High St - CO11
“Utterly reliable”, with “a great choice of fish and seafood cooked in a variety of ways” – “this is a go-to restaurant, and there’s nothing like it close by”, say fans of Californian chef Sherri Singleton’s former village coaching inn (with rooms), which she has run for more than two decades. She also has a cooking school on site and an Italian restaurant, Enoteca Lucca, in nearby Manningtree.
14. The George
British, Modern restaurant in Cavendish
The Green - CO10
Village pub near Sudbury relaunched in 2023 after an arty makeover of the interior, with “excellent, unusual burgers” – “some of the best around” – from a trio of friends who developed their ‘Divine’ burger menu at The Vine in Great Bardfield, Essex. They also serve a Yorkshire pudding ‘wrap’ filled with roast beef and pickles.
15. The Crown & Castle
British, Modern restaurant in Orford
Market Hill - IP12
Handy for a visit to the “interesting Orford Castle”, this “laidback” coastal restaurant-with-rooms offers some “delicious” cooking from a “menu that changes regularly and they always use excellent local produce, e.g., Pinney’s smoked salmon, Blythburgh pork, Pump House Bakery bread”. While the odd naysayer feels that “this place has declined in the hands of the local Hotel Folk group” (who took it over from ‘Hotel Inspector’ Ruth Watson), the majority verdict is much more buoyant, and “if you are staying then they serve the best breakfast – again all local produce”. Note that they “no longer open for lunch”, except for the “very good” Sunday roast.
16. Lark
British, Modern restaurant in Bury St Edmunds
6a Angel Hill - IP33
“Small-but-perfectly-formed restaurant serving small but perfectly formed dishes that are completely sensational” – James & Sophia Carn serve an “always changing seasonal menu” at their two-year-old venue in the town centre, which “improves every time you visit”. Their “small but passionate team” combines “interesting and exquisite food” with “great service” and a real sense of “fun – it would be hard to get more ambience in such a tiny place”. Concerns? – The “smallish” menu can seem limiting and the prices of all those little plates can tot up.
