Fish & Seafood Restaurants in Suffolk
1. Maison Bleue
French restaurant in Bury St Edmunds
30-31 Churchgate St - IP33
“Always delivers (if you can get in)” – “Karine, front of house, and Pascal (Canavet) in the kitchen are a fab combination” at this “gem” of a converted townhouse, invariably a much commented-on feature on our national diners’ poll. The French fine-dining fare is “very creatively plated” and word is that new spin-off Léa, offering artisan ready meals à la française, reaches the same impressive heights; “they also supply suppers for the local theatre” if you’re craving dinner and a show.
2. The Mistley Thorn Restaurant & Rooms
British, Modern restaurant in Mistley
High St - CO11
Californian Sherri Singleton’s “marvelous neighbourhood restaurant” occupies a 1723 coaching inn, with great views of the River Stour, and bedrooms set above the pub or on top of kitchen shop and cookery school. The “consistent” and “sophisticated seafood menu” (but not just) ensures that it’s “always popular”, and there was praise this year for the “good-value set menu” (two courses £24.95 or three courses £27.95 per person).
3. Shillingfords at The Foragers Retreat
International restaurant in Pebmarsh
The Courtyard - CO10
2022 Review: Carl & Beth Shillingford operate out of these converted former stables nowadays (having moved from art venue, The Quay in Sudbury, a few years ago). Food is served from breakfast and then deli-style throughout the day. On certain weekend evenings they bring back the full ‘Shillingford’s’ experience – providing a seasonal menu with many foraged ingredients. Limited but upbeat feedback – “a rustic-feeling place with good, rustic food”.
4. The Pier at Harwich
Fish & seafood restaurant in Harwich
The Quay - CO12
“Another from the Milsoms’ stable” (whose flagship is The Talbooth at Dedham), this delightful small hotel dating from 1860 has a dining room that is “fish-focused to reflect the setting”, on the historic Harwich waterfront.
5. Butley Orford Oysterage
Fish & seafood restaurant in Orford
Market Hill - IP12
The Pinney family’s fishy institution “hasn’t changed for 40 years, apart from the odd tweak to the menu – and why not, when it’s as perfect as this?” A “simple setting” doesn’t detract from its charms – including the fact that “it was doing local before it became a trendy buzzword, with fish (both fresh and smoked) and oysters from down the road”; “after you’ve eaten, you can wander through this impossibly picturesque village to their shop to take more home”.
