British, Modern Restaurants in Warwick
1. The Castle at Edgehill
British, Modern restaurant in Edgehill
Main Street - OX15
2022 Review: A dearth of feedback this year on this eye-catching landmark, which looks like a fairytale castle and occupies a striking position, with marvellous views over the countryside (and, for history anoraks, sits near a famous battleground from the English Civil War). Expect decent gastropub fare and a particularly cosy bar.
2. Lambs
British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon
12 Sheep Street - CV37
“Been around for ages, knows its market, does what it does well” – this long-established bistro is “a favourite of the Sheep Street restaurants convenient for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre”. “The dining rooms are pleasant – particularly on the first floor with its Tudor origins”; and “the service is open and welcoming”. Even one reporter who feels “the food is very acceptable but just not exciting” says “there is no real downside for a pre-theatre meal”; and all other accounts are more upbeat (“the menu varies, so there’s always something new and interesting to try”).
3. The Fuzzy Duck
British, Modern restaurant in Armscote
Ilmington Road - CV37
‘Contemporary Cotswold’ is the aim of this boutique inn near Stratford upon Avon, which was taken over about a decade ago by Adrian & Tania Slater (owners of Baylis & Harding). Cod ’n’ Chips does feature on the menu, but with its fish of the day and steak grills, the menu says ‘bistro’ more than it does ‘pub grub’.
4. The Opposition
British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon
13 Sheep Street - CV37
“A favourite for pre-theatre dining in Stratford” – this atmospheric bistro is “one of three reasonably priced restaurants in Sheep Street, great for a pre-theatre meal”. There was a contradiction this year in that it was the most commented-on of the three, and yet feedback was more varied than usual: from “always reliable and excellent value” to “a little pedestrian, but serviceable”.
5. Tailors
British, Modern restaurant in Warwick
22 Market Place - CV34
2022 Review: This former fishmonger, butcher, casino, tailor etc. is acclaimed by locals for its “perfect fine dining in an intimate setting”. After pandemic lockdowns, it’s “back with a subtle but impactful makeover and a great new tasting menu” – now the only option, and ringing in at £65 for six courses.
6. The Moorings at Myton
British, Modern restaurant in Leamington Spa
Myton Road - CV31
2022 Review: It’s “nice to eat outside by the canal on a sunny day” at this well-run casual spot, with a useful menu of grills and sarnies.
7. Mallory Court
British, Modern restaurant in Bishops Tachbrook
Harbury Lane - CV33
2022 Review: The oak-panelled dining room at this Lutyens-style Relais & Château spa hotel makes a suitable setting for chef Paul Evans to showcase fresh produce from the hotel’s long-established kitchen garden. Long-serving chef-director Simon Haigh oversees the Eden hotel collection’s culinary offering from this flagship restaurant.
8. The Cross at Kenilworth
British, Modern restaurant in Kenilworth
16 New St - CV8
“Adam Bennett produces dishes of supreme quality, prepared with flair and skill” at this top-class gastroboozer, whose dining room occupies a 19th-century former schoolroom, and whose bar occupies an old butcher’s. It received nothing but praise this year for what is a “fantastic dining experience and great value for money despite the ‘cost of living crisis’”. It’s worth noting, however, that in January 2025, owner Andreas Antona announced his retirement after 50 starry years in the industry, putting the legendary Simpson’s in Brum up for sale; while the latter’s fate remains in the balance, one regular here is “confident the superlative standards will be maintained” – and there’s a good chance they will, given that Antona has happily decided to carry on overseeing this venture alongside other personal projects.
9. Baraset Barn
British, Modern restaurant in Alveston
Pimlico Lane - CV37
2022 Review: With its “lovely setting (indoors or outdoors)” and “nicely priced menu” of dishes from around the world – including a selection of “fantastic” small plates to share – this 200-year-old country pub with a contemporary brasserie extension is a useful option near Stratford.
10. The Boot
British, Modern restaurant in Lapworth
Old Warwick Rd - B94
2022 Review: “A real gem in our local area” – this branch in the stylish, seven-strong Warwickshire-based 'Lovely Pubs' group has a lot to recommend it: “service is on the right side of friendly and very attentive”, they serve “great pub food, but restaurant quality” (including “fantastic seafood platters”), and if you stick to the main bar downstairs, there's plenty of atmosphere too.
11. The Vintner
British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon
4-5 Sheep St - CV37
2024 Review: This half-timbered town-centre fixture is useful for a “consistent offering” that includes “good-value lunch and pre-theatre menus”. “First ate here in the mid-80s with a Sixth Form school trip – it was good then and still is”.
12. The Woodsman
British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon
Chapel Street - CV37
“Excellent game – particularly venison, cooked to perfection over an open flame” – is the prime attraction at this Grade II listed building, which was standing in Stratford when Shakespeare was a boy. Wild-food specialist Mike Robinson presides over the kitchen, where game from their own estate and produce from their own botanical and herb garden is cooked over charcoal or wood (mostly oak and elder). Top Tip – “we’ve had Xmas lunch here for the last few years: always wonderful!”.
13. Rooftop Restaurant, Royal Shakespeare Theatre
British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon
Waterside - CV37
“A wonderful outlook”; that it’s “convenient while attending the theatre”; and that you should “book early if you want a riverside view from your table”, are undisputed points regarding the RSC’s top-floor dining room. More positive reports say that it has a “nice menu” and that “the food quality has improved recently”. Others, though, continue to find it “all round disappointing”, with “function-style fare” in a room that’s “drab” if you don’t get one of the good seats.
14. Cheal’s
British, Modern restaurant in Knowle
1630 High Street - B93
Ex-Simpson’s chef Matt Cheal decamped from smaller premises in Henley-in-Arden to the former Jacques fine dining restaurant in Knowle two years back, gaining a cocktail and tapas bar along the way. There’s a lot of love for the “wonderfully plush surroundings (my old branch of HSBC!) which lend any visit the feeling of a special occasion”, while early reports on the food – à la carte or a tasting menu – praise some “beautifully presented” dishes (even if some feel “the flavours aren’t quite as impressive as the surroundings”).
15. The Royal Oak
British, Modern restaurant in Whatcote
2 Upper Farm Barn - CV36
Highly rated village pub on the edge of the Cotswolds from Richard & Solanche Craven where “originality and local resourcing are dominant concerns” – “Richard’s cookery is always spot-on, and his love of game shines through in the fantastic dishes he serves up”. In late 2025 the couple launched a second venture in the village: a daytime bakery, ‘Ferment & Flour’, that turns into ‘Ricardo Bastardo’s’, a trattoria using English produce, in the evening.
16. The Howard Arms
British, Modern restaurant in Ilmington
Lower Green - CV36
“Traditional pub/small country hotel with nice touches”, nine miles south of Stratford, where the northern Cotswolds intersects with Shakespeare – you’ll find “very good local real ales plus superior pub grub, friendly staff and good-value set lunches”. It’s owned by journalist Andrew Knight, who ran both the Telegraph and Times newspaper groups.
17. The Bridge
British, Modern restaurant in Bidford On Avon
55 High Street - B50
2022 Review: On the banks of the Avon, this riverside eaterie boasts an excellent terrace overlooking a scenic Saxon bridge. It serves a modern bistro menu, with char-grilled steaks the prime attraction.
18. The Four Penny
British, Modern restaurant in Warwick
27-29 Crompton Street - CV34
This “lively local bar and restaurant with excellent food” is part of an owner-operated hotel midway between Warwick’s main attractions, the racecourse and the castle. The name derives from the price charged for a cup of coffee and a tot of rum here when the Grand Union Canal was under construction in the early 1800s.
19. The Boathouse
British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon
Swans Nest Lane - CV37
2022 Review: In a refurbished eighteenth-century boathouse (hence the name), this “excellent riverside bistro/café” delivers a “high-quality fish and seafood menu” – plus airy views of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from the balcony.
20. The Mount by Glynn Purnell
British, Modern restaurant in Henley-in-Arden
97 High Street - B95
Glynn Purnell’s three-year-old operation has a bright, modern interior that’s in contrast to the period building it inhabits on an attractive high street and is hailed by its biggest fans as “a great pub where food, drinks and service are all very good”. As with last year, though, its ratings in general are middling and dragged further down by the odd more critical report.
