50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo
Pizza restaurant in Westminster
7 Northumberland Avenue - WC2N
“The pizza is so good! – with lovely premium ingredients for the toppings too” – at this showcase just off Trafalgar Square for Ciro Salvo’s Naples-based chain. The cavernous space is “very lively”… to the extent it can seem “a little bit too loud”. Top Menu Tip – “great supplí” (Roman-style rice croquettes).

Ekstedt at The Yard, Great Scotland Yard Hotel
Scandinavian restaurant in Westminster
Great Scotland Yard - SW1A
“Mesmerising (even hypnotic) food and the live-fire kitchen meant I didn’t notice anything much that was going on around me!” – Stockholm star-chef Niklas Ekstedt’s dining room in Westminster’s Hyatt hotel captivates many diners with its theatrical Scandi flourishes. His “enthusiastic team” delivers “engaging explanations of each dish” and creates a “very interesting menu” that can be “absolutely fabulous”. Even those who say the food is “very good” however, can still feel it is “very overpriced”.

The Parlour, Great Scotland Yard
Afternoon tea restaurant in Westminster
Great Scotland Yard - SW1A
2022 Review: On the site of the original Metropolitan Police HQ, this 100-seater hotel (owned by an Indian entrepreneur and operated by Hyatt) opened in December 2019. The comfortable, ground-floor lounge – with Raj-inspired decor – serves a contemporary take on afternoon tea, with added spice; there are spicy chai options and tea-based cocktails too.

Café in the Crypt, St Martin in the Fields
British, Traditional restaurant in Covent Garden
Duncannon St - WC2
“We always come here when in London, as it’s such an atmospheric venue in a fantastic location” – St Martin-in-the-Fields has a superb, brick-vaulted crypt and its self-service cafeteria provides an unusually affordable option in this prime area. It’s variable though – hit lucky and you can have “a good value, very casual meal, if from a limited menu”; but one or two reports this year noted “real disappointment with the food offering”.

The OWO
International restaurant in Westminster
The Old War Office, 57 Whitehall Place - SW1A
2024 Review: A mega new hotel for London sees the Old War Office on Whitehall – in which Winston Churchill made many of the most important decisions of World War II – being taken over by Raffles, no less (their first venture in Europe) and the Hinduja Group, to open in late 2023 as a new 125 bedroom property. It will have nine new restaurants, of which we list the five most notable individually: Café Lapérouse, Endo Kazutoshi, Langosteria, Mauro Colagreco and Paper Moon (see also). Other options include Mauro’s Table and a fine high-ceilinged brasserie called ‘Saison’ – which fall under the Colagreco umbrella – as well as The Drawing Room (lounge and all-day dining) and Guards Bar.

Kerridge’s Bar & Grill, Corinthia Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Westminster
10 Northumberland Avenue - WC2N
“Brasserie food has been jazzed up to fit into the style of the Corinthia” by TV-star Tom Kerridge, and it‘s an approach that has proved enduring at this cavernous and moodily decorated bar/restaurant on Northumberland Avenue, which he runs in partnership with the adjoining, deluxe five-star hotel. Even those who say the cooking is “well done”, however, say it’s “not a choice for the budget-conscious” and an increasing number of reporters experience “rushed service” and feel it’s a case of “a lot of hype for ordinary food at escalated prices”.
20.
The Northall, Corinthia London
International restaurant in Trafalgar Square
10a Northumberland Ave - WC2
As ‘plain vanilla’ posh hotel brasseries go, this elegant and airy chamber near Embankment station puts in a polished performance, yet arguably flies under the radar in terms of media profile (and inspires only limited feedback in our annual diners’ poll). André Garrett’s cuisine is “very good” and staff are “professional and friendly”. Top Tip – “excellent lunch menu” at £39 for two courses.
