Afternoon Tea Restaurants in North Yorkshire
1. Samuel’s, Swinton Park Hotel & Spa
British, Modern restaurant in Masham
Swinton Park - HG4
“Don’t just dine… stay… walk the deer park before dinner, take a G&T on the lawn, dine… retire to the billiards room… go to the spa in the morning” – that say fans is how you get the most out of a trip to this “romantic” location: a large country house hotel whose flagship dining room and its ‘Estate to Plate ethos’ is looked after by chef Struan Macintyre. The dining room itself is “interesting and intimate" but it’s the “tasty cuisine that’s its point of difference”. Gone are the multi-course offerings of the past here: the menu now is in a luxe brasserie style, with mains such as Swinton Estate Venison, Line Caught Sea Bass or sharing options for two such as Côte de Boeuf or Lobster.
2. Bettys
Afternoon tea restaurant in Northallerton
189a High St - DL7
Afternoon tea is “a trip back in time” at this “consistent” branch of the much-loved Yorkshire tea room brand – the business has occupied fine Georgian premises in this county town of North Yorkshire for 55 years now. “Prices have soared, but it’s still lovely going here for a treat and their breakfasts are still the best”, while substantial lunches are also available. (Unlike some of its siblings, it does not open in the evening.)
3. The Pheasant Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Harome
“A beautifully located small hotel opposite the village pond with garden views, comfortable bedrooms” and “good food from a short menu” – Jacquie Pern’s former village smithy has been a North Yorkshire staple for more than 15 years. Ratings did not hit the heights here this year – with a couple of up-and-down reports – but change was afoot following our annual diners’ poll with the arrival of new head chef Adam Westgarth, whose appointment aims to herald a new direction in the kitchen, working closely with a local farm providing regenerative crops, heritage breed livestock and wild game.
4. Bettys
Afternoon tea restaurant in Harrogate
1 Parliament Street - HG1
“A Yorkshire institution” that’s “not to be missed!” – These famous tea rooms owe their existence to Swiss founder Frederick Belmont, who opened them in 1919 and his family now also operate at four other locations across North Yorkshire. “A great, old school and classic experience” – they are “everyone’s favourite” and afternoon tea is “a real occasion” that’s “well worth queuing for”. Top Menu Tips – “scrumptious fat rascals” (a kind of Yorkshire scone).
5. The Ivy St Helen's Square
British, Modern restaurant in York
2 Saint Helen’s Square - YO1
2022 Review: The York branch of Richard Caring’s glossy Ivy chain generates most enthusiasm for its attractive interior, which makes it a pleasant spot to while away an hour or two – including over afternoon tea – especially if you can nab a table by the full-length windows (difficult to guarantee, since tables are allocated on arrival).
6. Bettys
Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Ilkley
32 The Grove - LS29
2023 Review: “Afternoon tea IS Bettys!". This old-fashioned tearoom is “always worth the queue” for its epic teas and fine spreads of pastries and sarnies. It’s also “a great place to meet over a very good breakfast. Coffee, understandably, is excellent!”
