Fish & Seafood Restaurants in North Yorkshire
1. Fish and Forest
Fish & seafood restaurant in York
110 Micklegate - YO1
“A strong focus on fish, with venison from the ‘forest’” both wins praise for and helps explain the name of this popular bistro. We’ve maintained its rating, but change is afoot with chef-patron Stephen Andrews moving it in August 2024 to this new location – the downstairs of what was previously 1331 Bar and Grill building, in Grape Lane (previously owned by Stephen’s parents who ran the business for 20 years). No change is planned to the format, which started life as a pop-up concept in 2018 and has consciously adopted an à la carte rather than tasting approach (with a seasonal chalkboard menu now offering eight starters, four mains, plus four desserts). There’s also a bar area, a communal table and a courtyard outside offering a snacks menu which will include oysters and cured fish. Everything served is cured or butchered in-house.
2. Tharavadu
Indian restaurant in Leeds
7- 8 Mill Hill - LS1
“You’d walk past and miss the food if you didn’t know about it” – this highly popular Keralan is “one of the best restaurants in Leeds” and “a must-try” if you like south Indian cuisine. (“We heard that this is where Virat Kohli and his wife choose to eat when there’s a Test Match in Leeds. If it’s good enough for Kohli, it‘s certainly good enough for us! We had an excellent meal here in April 2024, buzzy atmosphere, the best Masala Dosa we’ve eaten since visiting India. Waiting staff all delightful – an all-round wonderful experience”). Now after 10 years of operation, they are on the expansion trail having taken over a top-floor space elsewhere in the city that can seat 350.
3. The Seaview Restaurant
Fish & seafood restaurant in Saltburn
The Foreshore Building, Lower Promenade - TS12
“You can’t fault this superb restaurant” which is “good for both fish ’n’ chips and fine-dining dishes” – and boasts “great views out to sea, which is fitting as that’s where what’s on the menu comes from”. “Most patrons seem to opt for fish ’n’ chips, which means they’re missing out on some delicious alternatives” – such as the ‘Saltburn crab brioche’.
4. Crab & Lobster
Fish & seafood restaurant in Asenby
Dishforth Rd - YO7
An “original ambience” contributes to the charm of this eccentrically decorated hotel-restaurant, bedecked in grandfather clocks, chandeliers, tubas and drums – and part of the 18th-century Crab Manor, where the quirky décor continues in five globe-trotting bedrooms. “Tasty” fish is the specialism, but there was also praise this year for the “nice game”. Service can still occasionally lag – “maybe short staffed”? In Summer 2024, they added a sun-trapped terrace, further amplifying the “nice surroundings”.
5. Graveley’s Fish & Chip Restaurant
Fish & chips restaurant in Harrogate
8-12 Cheltenham Parade - HG1
2021 Review: “A very traditional Yorkshire chippie” which doesn’t offer anything fancy but “just good fish ’n’ chips” (the former “huge and well-battered”, and “you can go for more exotic if you wish”); “a little tip – avoid early evening when the ‘pensioners’ special menu’ is served – it will be heaving!”
6. Drum & Monkey
Fish & seafood restaurant in Harrogate
5 Montpellier Gdns - HG1
“A true beacon in the North” and a “great Harrogate fixture” – this “classic fish restaurant” has been a feature of the Montpellier Quarter for over 50 years (est. 1971) and has been run by the Carter family since 2013. All the many reports we receive (it’s one of the top-100 most commented on places outside London in our annual diners’ poll) say it “always delivers high quality and a very reliable menu choice”: “I keep thinking it must start to fail, but each time we go, it’s just as good as always. Been going for years and never fails to impress with the delicious seafood and the friendly helpful service”. Top Menu Tip – “always good oysters”.
7. The Whippet Inn
Steaks & grills restaurant in York
15 North St - YO1
“Tucked away off the main street and without a sign outside, it may be difficult to find but it’s well worth seeking out” this trendy decade-old haunt from the owners of the Stone Trough Inn in Kirkham Abbey. The venue “specialises in beef, especially ex-dairy cows”, be it Finnish Sashi beef, or Galicia’s famous blonde cattle; add in a “buzzy atmosphere” and “attentive” service, and it “makes for a meat-eater’s heaven”.
8. The Wensleydale Heifer
British, Modern restaurant in West Witton
Main St - DL8
Stewarded by father-and-son duo David & Lewis Moss for two decades, this “fantastic Dales inn” (notably friendly to doggos) has a prime setting in the national park, and combines “friendly service” with “great food” that (despite the name) is notably fish-centric. If you want to make a night of it, they have pleasant themed rooms (including one dedicated to 007, to assuage fans irritated by the long delayed next instalment) and a private two-bedroom cottage just a few steps away.
