International Restaurants in North Yorkshire
1. Origin Social
Fusion restaurant in Northallerton
2 Friarage Street - DL6
“If you happen to find yourself in Northallerton, a sure place to go!” – this two-year-old small plates venture focuses on live-fire cooking, and is a good bet in this thinly provided town.
2. The Angel
British, Modern restaurant in Hetton
“The original gastropub” – this North Yorks inn has been famous for decades for cuisine that’s unusually accomplished for a pub (featuring, for example, in The Trip, in 2010) and was purchased in 2018 by current owner Michael Wignall, who swept aside its former old-fashioned looks in favour of a stylish, if perhaps “clinical” new interior (“I’ve lost an old friend, but found a bright, young thing!”). All reports agree that he has successfully re-established the place on the UK’s foodie map: the “really interesting and unusual cooking features some unusual pairings and over three hours engaging staff popped up everywhere and are willing to discuss the food, its preparation and its great presentation, all at a very reasonable price”. At dinner, choose from a three-course menu for £110 per person, or there’s a nine-course tasting option for £165 per person.
3. Skosh
British, Modern restaurant in York
98 Micklegate - YO1
“Clever small plate dishes with exciting flavour combinations” have established Neil Bentinck’s city-centre destination as one of York’s most popular in recent years. “Some seats are up at a counter watching the chefs at work, whilst the remainder still have the atmosphere of being in a busy kitchen restaurant”. “Getting a table can sometimes feel like trying to get tickets for Glastonbury, but it is really worth it for amazing British-Japanese fusion food that’s so inventive but not too expensive, with new dishes being created all the time”. “Relaxing, with a buzz of warmth and efficiency”: “It leaves you with a deeper love of humanity and a sense of what a great local can give!”. “Looking forward to the knock through to next door” – planning permission was finally granted in early 2023 and work is due to be complete by the end of the year.
4. The Dawnay Arms
International restaurant in Newton On Ouse
2023 Review: “Whilst walking in the area, dropped in for lunch without prior knowledge – what a gem!". Kerry & Martel Smith’s rustic gastropub by the River Ouse, is consistently well rated. “The ambience and friendly welcome make it immediately a winner and that’s cemented with the tremendous cuisine”.
5. Mannion & Co
British, Modern restaurant in York
1 Blake St - YO1
This deli-café in a former grocer’s shop is “worth the queue” for a coffee and a treat, while the “surf ’n’ turf lunch is also very good”. Success has led to spinoffs in Helmsley and, last year, in Easingwold (where it’s called OPC after the old police cells on the premises).
6. Salts Diner
International restaurant in Saltaire
Salts Mill, Victoria Road - BD18
2021 Review: “Hockneys in view” as you dine are the most famous attraction of this noisy but atmospheric venue: a large, post-industrial space in the UNESCO-listed Salts Mill complex, open from breakfast on for a coffee or fuller meal (Saltburger, Caesar salad, etc).
7. The Blue Barbakan
Polish restaurant in York
34 Fossgate - YO1
An “excellent” Polish restaurant (also drawing on wider European influences) that is “doing well in its enlarged setting” in Fossgate – having swapped its former Walmgate home for the old premises of the Blue Bicycle in 2020 (and having added blue to its name in tribute). Top Tip – “go hungry as the portions (of pierogi, stews, etc.) are huge, hearty and tasty”, and you may then be “too full to try the excellent-looking selection of cakes”.
8. Kino
International restaurant in Leeds
34 New Briggate - LS1
Attached to the Grand Theatre of Opera North, this brasserie makes for a “very handy new addition to the Leeds dining scene, especially if you’re going to a show at the Grand”. While it was initially dedicated to extended residencies from small food businesses they appear to have changed tack, with former MasterChef: The Professionals semi-finalist Josh Whitehead appointed head chef in May 2023. Here’s hoping that it doesn’t lose its initial momentum.
