Fast-rising chef Ruth Hansom has opened the first restaurant under her own name in Bedale, North Yorkshire, having spent much of last year running Samuels at the nearby Swinton Park Hotel.
Hansom Restaurant & Wine Bar, where she is partnered by her husband, Mark Hansom-Rigby, promises “a contemporary tasting menu experience, combining only the finest produce from the land, earth & sea into a purposefully-designed epicurean adventure of luxury & provenance“.
Ahead of the launch, Ruth said “the restaurant will be intimate but relaxed, with a menu focusing on Yorkshire provenance and seasonality. Upstairs the wine bar will focus on interesting wines that change often, alongside small plates following the same produce ethos.”
Born 20 miles away in Darlington, Ruth trained at Westminster College and the Ritz in London, and in 2017 became the first female to win the Young National Chef of the Year title. Still in her 20s, she has already racked up a series of head chef postings – at Luton Hoo Hotel, Pomona’s in Notting Hill and The Princess of Shoreditch gastropub – as has made regular television appearances.
The new restaurant can seat 16 guests and the 8-course tasting menu costs £75, while Sunday roasts range from £18–£24.
