Jamie Oliver is closing his last Union Jacks restaurant, in Covent Garden plaza, bringing an end to the his flatbreads-and-British-comfort-food hybrid after five years.
The announcement follows the closure in January of six branches of the celebrity chef’s under-performing Jamie’s Italian chain. The other three Union Jacks branches closed in January 2014.
A company spokesman said: “Union Jacks has been a profitable restaurant for us and we’ve enjoyed being part of the Covent Garden estate. However, it is not one of our core brands and not part of our wider growth strategy. Jamie’s Italian continues to flourish in Covent Garden and we’ve just opened a beautiful new flagship Barbecoa restaurant in Piccadilly.”
He added that all staff at Union Jacks will be offered jobs elsewhere in the group.
