The first concerted spell of sunshine this summer has brought a flurry of Australian-style café activity to London, led by the launch of Sydney favourite the Rusty Rabbit in Notting Hill.
Opening in Westbourne Grove later this month, the Rusty Rabbit is promising to bring its full brunch menu, which includes sweet potato and corn fritters, Middle Easter-inspired ‘lamb eggs’, and signature pancakes served with ricotta, strawberries, compote, passionfruit, pistachios and maple syrup.
Brothers Joshua and Jamesray Khoury opened the original in central Sydney’s Darlinghurst 10 years ago, and have developed a strong online following with distinctive merchandising that goes beyond the standard T-shirts to include shoodies, jackets, hats and socks.
Also channeling a Sydney vibe is the latest branch of Daisy Green, Glamarama Green, which opens next week around the corner from South Kensington tube station. Named with a nod to Tamarama Beach in Sydney – next to Bondi and known as Glamarama for its particularly eye-catching denizens – it is the 17th in the Daisy Green group and will also project a more British ‘granny glamour’, picking up on William Morris designs from the nearby V&A Museum.
South of the river, Milk – Balham’s long-time pioneer of Antipodean brunch in London – has opened a spin-off called Milk Run a mile or so down the A29 towards Tooting Bec. And in the City, Melbourne-style coffee purists (so no brunch) Rosslyn Coffee have opened their fourth branch in the grand Royal Exchange, with two more projected to follow by the end of the year.
