Royal Opera House serves up supper without the song

The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden is to open Piazza, its fifth-floor restaurant, to the public for the first time when it relaunches this month. Previously restricted to ticket-holders on the day of a performance, Piazza will be open for lunch every day and dinner every night except Sunday from 27 September – allowing the ROH to exploit its prime position in one of the most popular parts of central London.

Featuring a glassed-in terrace overlooking the old Covent Garden flower market, Piazza was created when the Opera House was remodelled in 2018. It will still be operated by the ROH’s longstanding caterer, the Company of Cooks, with a new, modern British menu designed by executive chef Richard Robinson, formerly of Per Se and the French Laundry.

The emphasis will be on seasonality and sustainability, with top-drawer suppliers including James Knight of Mayfair, who hold the Royal Warrant as Fishmongers to Her Majesty The Queen; H. Forman & Son for smoked salmon; charcutiers Cobble Lane; Paxton and Whitfield, London’s oldest cheesemongers; and Ellis Wines, a 200-year-old independent, family-owned on-trade wine business.
