Chef Nuno Mendes has teamed up with Barworks to launch a new neighbourhood venue in Hackney’s Keltan House, incorporating a bar, restaurant, deli and café. Mare Street Market opens this winter (date still TBA).
Nuno, of course, made his name at Bethnal Green’s Viajante (RIP) and has gone on to head up Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone (a bit of a disappointment after the culinary wonders of Viajante) and his Portuguese passion project, the “unfussy” but “brilliant” Taberna do Mercado in Old Spitalfields Market. There were rumours of a Viajante revival last year, and a crowd-funding campaign, but we haven’t heard any developments since they missed their funding target. Let’s hope it’s still on the cards.
So this will be Nuno’s third London project, Mare Street Market will be housed in Keltan House – a big converted warehouse on Hackney’s Mare Street (perhaps the last bastion of crummy shops and betting parlours in this completely hipster-ised borough). He will run it jointly with Barworks – the company behind The Diner, Wenlock & Essex and the Exmouth Arms.
No word on what the food offering will be like as yet – watch this space for more details.
