New England seafood specialist Saltie Girl makes its international debut next week with its launch on North Audley Street in Mayfair. As the address might suggest, it will be a pretty upmarket offering – the original is noted for serving Martinis with a caviar-topped olive.
Founder Kathy Sidell, a serial Boston restaurateur, says she was inspired both by the New England seafood she grew up with and the bars of Barcelona when she launched Saltie Girl in 2016. For the London branch she is partnered by Varun Talreja of the Greek restaurant Meraki in Fitzrovia; a Los Angeles branch will also open next week.
New England specialities including clam chowder and lobster are among the expected highlights of the menu, but the most intriguing aspect of the Boston original is its collection of more than 60 varieties of tinned fish, served with bread and butter.
Kathy said, “The British are certainly lovers of fish – fried, potted, smoked, sautéed. Varun and I feel that Saltie Girl, offering every iteration of seafood, will speak enthusiastically to the British palate and that Londoners and visitors alike will be intrigued by our offerings and the fine food and service that we pride ourselves on.”
