Italian-Brazilian chef Rafael Cagali, whose Da Terra in Bethnal Green is the top-ranking London restaurant in the current Harden’s guide, is to open a second venture at the same address.
Elis will take over the site of the Corner Room restaurant in the Town Hall Hotel, in Bethnal Green’s beautifully restored former town hall, which was built in 1910 with Art Deco interiors added in the 1930s. Elis will serve a more relaxed take on the Italian-accented Brazilian cuisine that Rafael pushes to “absolutely sublime” heights at Da Terra.
“We will be serving more rustic dishes, with a selection of elegant snacks and good wine – everything from my favourite street food to family meal celebration dishes that my grandma used to make”.
Born in Sao Paulo, Rafael has worked at the Fat Duck and Simon Rogan’s Fera at Claridge’s (RIP), as well as famous kitchens in Italy and Spain. His mother’s jazz bar and restaurant in Sao Paulo was named Elis after the Brazilian singer Elis Regina.
