West Country seafood impresario Mitch Tonks has opened a new outdoor fish and craft beer bar in Plymouth, adjacent to his Rockfish restaurant on Rope Walk, overlooking Plymouth Sound. The Sardine Bar serves fried fish and chips and curried mushy peas, alongside Mount Bay sardines from the range of tinned local seafood Tonks introduced during the lockdown.
There are now eight Rockfish restaurants stretching from Poole and Weymouth in Dorset along the south Devon coast, in addition to Mitch’s longstanding flagship, The Seahorse in Dartmouth. A further two Rockfish branches are scheduled to open this year, at Salcombe and Sidmouth – the latter first announced in January 2020 but delayed by a combination of the pandemic and legal issues.
Mitch said: “The deck of The Sardine Bar is a vibrant and colourful place to meet friends or bring the family. It’s a perfect spot to sit in comfort and enjoy some freshly fried local sustainable seafood and great beers from Salcombe brewery, with unbeatable views overlooking the water.”
