Gallic ‘canteen’ opens at Borough Market

A new French deli, bakery and ‘canteen’, Café François, is to open next week in Borough Yards, taking over the two-storey former Paul Smith shop on the edge of Borough Market.

It is a spinoff from Maison François in St James’s, founded four years ago by François O’Neill and already established as a West End favourite for its “top-notch and crowd-pleasing” menu of brasserie classics, according to the 2024 Harden’s guide.

The new café will operate all day, with a deli counter and rotisserie on the ground floor. Full meals will be served in dining rooms upstairs, with views into the open kitchen and bakery.

The deli menu ranges from pâtisserie to baguettes filled with chicken from the rotisserie, steak or banh mi-style roast pork belly, with salads and pickled vegetables available. More substantial dishes include lobster served with frites.

Café François opens on Wednesday 11 September.
