In a rather timely report (it being Earth Awareness Month and all), the House of Lords’ EU Committee has called for urgent action on food waste. This is not a little local issue. Global food waste’s carbon footprint is twice that of America’s trucks and automobiles!
The Lord’s committee now wants the European Commission to publish a five-year strategy on food waste prevention. Peers have also called on retailers to be ‘more responsible’ and do away with ‘buy one get on free’ offers that lead to food waste at home. Supermarkets have been asked not to waste unsold food and may even be incentivised to use food banks through tax breaks and VAT rate amendments.
