Street food from the Philippines finds permanent perch

Filipino street-food specialist Rex De Guzman opens his first permanent restaurant, Turo Turo barbecue and grill, in Tooting next Wednesday, 14 November.

A former chef at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze, Rex has operated Turo Turo – a term for fast food in the Philippines – as a market stall over the past decade, and more recently as a residency at the Queen’s Head in Holborn.

Dishes include: Oxtail kare kare croquettes with peanut sauce and ensaladang talong; four-hour braised pork Ticino rice bowl; Beef longganisa sausage sandwich with yoghurt and sriracha; Prawn ginataan, in a spiced coconut sauce, and Royal bibingka dessert, a sweet rick cake with melted cheddar choose and villa ice cream.

Groups of eight or more can share a ‘Boodle Fight’ feast, with dishes served on a bed of banana leaves without crockery or cutlery.
