Spanish veteran’s new Edinburgh spot

Veteran Edinburgh restaurateur Ignacio ‘Iggy’ Campos opens his latest venture next Wednesday (August 14) – a wine and tapas bar called Cata in Northwest Circus Place, Stockbridge.

Now aged 72, he announced the opening with a social media post proclaiming “Iggy is back in business!” – “In Spanish, Cata means to taste, to try or a tasting of something. This is what we are all about. We want CATA to be your place to taste and experience the essence of Spain, regardless of what the weather says outside.”

Iggy’s restaurant Iggs was one of the first Spanish restaurants in Scotland when it opened in 1989 on Jeffrey Street, where it ran for more than 25 years. He planned to retire when that closed in 2015, but made a comeback four years later, opening Piggs wine bar on the Royal Mile with his son Daniel. It is now run by Daniel and his younger brother, Victor.

At Cata he is joined by Lucia Moreno, former chef at Piggs, and Cat Tossnie, former manager at Auld Hundred. It offers a list of 60 Spanish wines alongside hand-cut Ibérico jamón and a selection of tapas, pintxos and postres.
