No fanfare for new Notting Hill Italian

A new Italian restaurant called Canteen opened quietly this week in Notting Hill from the team behind The Hero in Maida Vale, which launched to rave reviews earlier this summer.

Canteen has taken over the former Pizza East site on the corner of Portobello and Golborne Roads, with a kitchen run by two ex-River Café chefs, Jessica Filbey and Harry Hills.

Unlike The Hero – which opened in a blaze of publicity – Canteen has had a very sotto voce unveiling. Currently offering just lunch on Monday to Friday, for walk-ins only, it has no website, publishing its daily changing menu on Instagram (canteen.301) at 11am.

Dished featured so far include pizzette with mortadella, ricotta and lemon or with gorgonzola and fig, along with hand-made pasta such as gnocchi with duck ragu.

Canteen is from the Public House group, led by Phil Winser and James Gummer, who run the nearby Pelican and the Bull in Charlbury, Oxfordshire, as well as the Hero.
