Two former pop-ups which combine hifi sounds with tasty food (and serious drinks) have opened in South London – Hausu in Peckham and Jazu in Deptford.
Hausu, which has taken over the former Coal Rooms premises in the old booking hall at Peckham Rye station, describes its approach as ‘vintage high-fidelity sound & modern cuisine’.
This week’s opening menu from head chef Holly Joseph (ex-Frank’s and the Camberwell Arms), features small plates such as scallop and prawn toast and the cutely named ‘Dad’s broth and skewer’, alongside larger sharing plates such as fish with seaweed and roe, kohlrabi cake with wild mushrooms or steak with crispy garlic, chilli and lemon.
The venue’s Instagram feed declares: “We feel proud of the dishes we have put together and of the ingredients selected to go in them. Our drinks menu is of equal importance to us and has been a communal labour of love over the last few months.
“Hopefully over time some of these dishes will become core memories of food thoroughly enjoyed with friends, over candlelit tables and vintage hifi sounds.”
Meanwhile, JAZU opened in Deptford High street earlier this summer from a trio of kitchen and bar veterans as “our version of everyone’s favourite place to be – a bar – with a bespoke sound-system“.
Its kitchen opens next Saturday (19 October) under one of the founding trio, Jimmy, who has worked at the Neptune in Norfolk as well as Elliot’s, Lardo and Crispin in London
His concise menu includes house-made focaccia, patron peppers and cheese puffs along with larger plates including burgers with either roast monkfish or native-breed beef, and jerk pork chop with smacked cucumbers. He also serves weekend brunch featuring home-cured bacon..
