A prominent London Chinese restaurant faces closure following repeated raids by immigration enforcement officers. The website Hot Dinners reports that Westminster Council has applied to revoke the licence of the Royal China on Baker Street, on grounds that it “appears to be operating with a complete disregard for the law and the licensing objectives“.
A popular spot for dim sum, the restaurant has operated for almost 30 years and is part of a group headed by nearby flagship Royal China Club.
According to the council, “Royal China is currently the worst licensed premises in Westminster that we are dealing with for illegal working.” It has already been fined £110,000 for breaches of the law.
One raid by immigration enforcement officers resulted in “staff running through the restaurant and discarding their uniform“, while in another “8 staff members attempted to escape from the premises via a lift at the rear loading area.”
A decision is expected later this summer.
