Brazilian venue retooled for a second attempt

A new Brazilian restaurant has opened next door to the Brazilian consulate in Vere Street, just off Oxford Street. Maroto has picked up the baton from Bossa, a highly touted outfit which closed down on the site after barely six months at the beginning of the year.

Maroto was the name of the bar that opened in the basement below Bossa in summer 2023. It has operated in its new guise on an informal basis this summer before the official launch with a new menu this week.

Bossa was headed by chef Alberto Landgraf, whose Rio de Janeiro flagship Oteque boasted two Michelin stars and a place on the World 50 Best restaurant list. It failed to make much of an impression in London.

Maroto’s kitchen is headed by chefs Mark Tolentino and Mehmet Talayhan, who worked together at Launceston Place under its former head chef Ben Murphy (who left this summer). They are serving British ingredients with bold Brazilian saucing, such as Cornish hake with moqueca sauce comprising coconut milk, peppers and dendê oil; scallops with tangy tucupi sauce, and slow-cooked pork belly with aromatic feijoada sauce. There is also a massive tomahawk steak for sharing between up to four people.

Downstairs, the Maroto ‘Lounge’ and late-night bar offers Brazilian-inspired cocktails along with live music and DJ sets from musical director Shane Mac.
