A high-end Chinese restaurant featuring the cuisines of Canton and Hubei with a signature luxury set menu at £388 a head is launching this month in Fitzrovia.
3 Gorges has taken over the former Trattoria Mondello in Goodge Street, across the road from founder Li Zhang’s Sichuan-inspired restaurant Sanxia Renjia, which also has branches in Kingston and Bromley.
She has hired Cantonese specialist Yipeng Qian from Gouqi off Trafalgar Square, where he was head chef. He spent a decade at Hakkasan and was also part of the launch team at MiMi Mei Fair.
He says: “Cantonese food is having a well deserved resurgence after fiery Northern Chinese dishes became so popular here in the last decade. As a chef who has spent his career perfecting the skill of contemporary Hong Kong and Canton cuisine it’s a big moment for me with the launch of 3 Gorges.”
His menu includes dishes such as Three-coloured xiao long bao, Braised seafood soup, Crispy fried oysters, Miso Spicy East Wind Snails, Peach Gum Duck Soup and Spicy beef shank. Luxury ingredients include abalone, lobster and starfish, while the signature ‘Three ways of eating geoduck’ (a giant Pacific clam) must be ordered in advance. The top-price luxury set menu comprises 12 courses featuring ‘Wine Sauce Spanish Red Prawns’, ‘Premium Budda Jump Over the Wall’, ‘Cheese Lobster and Black Truffle King Crab Noodles’ and ‘Caviar Peking Beijing Duck’.
