Northcote, Langho: Easter Escape
Special Rates available Easter Monday-Thursday 31 March
£145 pp
Dine in Northcote’s celebrated restaurant, enjoy Nigel Haworth’s five-course gourmet menu, relax with a night’s stay, and wake up to a fabulous breakfast.
A “love-it-or-hate-it” refurb a couple of years ago (most reporters love it), complete with “numerous alterations and extensions” (and the installation of a “flashy bar”) has zhooshed up the North West’s most prominent country house hotel. Lisa Allen’s “effortlessly delicious” seasonal cuisine (“so intense it makes you drool!”) is matched with a “tremendous” and “constantly evolving” wine list, and served “without undue formality” by staff who “couldn’t be more helpful”. Top Menu Tip – “the table d’hote lunch is simply stunning value”.
Jeremy’s at Borde Hill, Haywards Heath

Easter Monday Bank Holiday jazz lunch 28 March: £40 per person 3 courses
“Eat outside in warm weather, otherwise ask for a window table overlooking the terrace and walled garden”, if you dine at Jeremy Ashpool’s “very romantic”, “friendly and professional” favourite, which is “perfect for a special occasion (and sometimes the occasion is that we’re eating at Jeremy’s!)” Most reports remain of “exquisite” cooking too (although there were a few former fans this year who said it fell short – “hopefully a blip not a trend”).

The “multi-layered flavours and textures” of dishes (ranging “from the mild to the incendiary”) and “warmly welcoming service”, “more than compensate for the out-of-the-way location”, and veggies are unusually well catered for.
