Former Smithfield bar Oriole is reopening this month in Covent Garden with a significantly upgraded restaurant serving Latin American-influenced dishes – and live jazz music as an added extra.
The operation has run as pop-up called Prelude this summer, and launches next week in its new home in St Martin’s Courtyard, Slingsby Place. Guests are invited to book for the soft launch, when there will be a 25% discount on the bill from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 August, with permanent opening from 28 August.
Chef director Gustavo Giallionardo combines Latin American and European cuisines, resulting in dishes such as lamb rump with spring greens, carrots and huacatay, a black mint from Peru, or a dessert of coconut tres leches with fig leaf sauce and coconut sorbet.
Bar director Samet Ali has developed a new cocktail menu in an in-house bar lab using an ‘ultrasonic homogeniser’, with a focus on South American ingredients, while the ground-floor Bamboo Bar will serve some cocktails on draught.
The main bar and restaurant is in the basement, which will feature live jazz nights.
