Chef Mitch Tonks is to open a Devon outpost of his popular fishmonger-cum-restaurant, Rockfish, in partnership with Matt Prowse. The 130-cover venture, above Brixham market, will launch on 30 April with al fresco seating as well as the main dining room and private dining space.
As you might expect the restaurant’s proximity to the fish market means the menu is heavily influenced by the morning’s catch. Rockfish will also operate a take-away, serving fried fish and breakfasts 7-11am, including scallop and back bacon rolls and smoked haddock.
In addition to his Rockfish restaurants, Tonks also owns The Seahorse in Dartmouth where – according to our most recent survey – “everything is done beautifully but without fuss” – not least “lovely fish, straight out of the sea”. The restaurateur’s Bristol site Spiny Lobster (previously Rockfish Grill) also has its fans among our reporters, who tip its for “great fish, great wine, great staff, great times” (a pithy slogan which we would generously allow Tonks to buy from us). Critics, however, find the formula “expensive for what you get”.
