The husband-and-wife chefs behind Bristol Korean restaurant Bokman are to launch their second venture next week. Dongnae, from Kyu Jeong Jeon and Duncan Robertson, opens next Friday (27 September) on foodie Chandos Road in Redland.
They say, “The name Dongnae (동네) means ‘neighbourhood’ in Korean, and we’re absolutely thrilled to become part of the vibrant Chandos Road community. We’ll be open for lunch and dinner, serving a menu inspired by Kyu’s upbringing in Seoul, our time living there, and of course, the mouth-watering flavours of traditional Korean BBQ.
“You can look forward to a fantastic value lunch menu, à la carte options, and for the curious, our Hanjeongsik (omakase-style) menu, which will showcase some of our favourite dishes.”
The set lunch costs £24 per person, the nine-course Hanjeongsik £55, and there are plenty of à la carte options ranging from £3.50 for a pork belly and rice cake skewer to £32 for a Wagyu featherblade steak cooked over charcoal. As at Bokman, there is a list of low-intervention wines, and diners can either sit at tables or at a counter overlooking the kitchen.
Kyu and Duncan worked in the UK, US, Korea and France – including in famous Paris restaurants run by Joel Robuchon and Alain Ducasse – before settling in Bristol. Diners at Bokman, which they opened five years ago, have hailed it in the Harden’s guide as “some of the most exciting food I have eaten in ages”.
The head chef at Dongnae is Clarence Fung, who has worked for Pophams Bakery, Gordon Ramsay and most recently as sous-chef at Tom Sellers’ Dovetale restaurant in London, while general manager Rebecca Lewis has joined from Stockport’s well-known Where The Light Gets In.
