Jason Atherton has opened his new Mayfair flagship restaurant, Row on 5, pitching it this week as the summit of his career: “my legacy … my life’s work as a chef“.
It is the fifth and final new venture he has launched in a reshuffle of his London operations over the past six months, beginning with the closure of Pollen Street Social, where he established his reputation as an owner-operator.
A second iteration of his Row on 45 in Dubai, which boasts two Michelin stars, the new venture is on Savile Row – an appropriate address for such a snappily dressed chef-restaurateur. Jason demonstrated his ambition for the venture by poaching highly rated chef Spencer Metzger from the Ritz to head up the kitchen.
He said: “I have been fortunate enough to open restaurants all over the world, but Row on 5 is different. I want it to be my legacy, and I don’t say that lightly. ‘Row’ stands for ‘Refinement of Work’, and in this case I mean my life’s work as a chef. Row on 5 will be like a fashion designer’s haute couture collection – a showcase of creativity and finesse, but instead of fine fabrics and artisanal needlework, the stars of Row on 5 will be the world-class culinary team and the very best produce from all over the British Isles.”
Row on 5 offers only a 15-course tasting menu costing £198.50 for lunch or dinner. The meal is served in three ‘acts’ in three different settings within the restaurant, to no more than 28 guests at each sitting.
Jason’s recent openings in London consist of Mary’s in Pollen Street, Sael in St James’s Market, Three Darlings in Chelsea and Hot Dogs by Three Darlings in Harrods.
