Flush with its success in Fitzrovia, Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack opened its branch in Exmouth Market today (22 April).
Like the original operation (“small but perfectly formed”), the new outlet serves up the catch of the day, using only sustainable seafood. The menu, available to eat-in or take-away, includes oysters, cockles, smoked mussels and langoustines served on newspaper as well as fish finger sandwiches and lobster and crab rolls.
Those eating in can also enjoy grilled Dorset crab with avocado on beef dripping sourdough toast; beer-battered Manx Queenies with paprika mayo and Channel salt ‘n’ pepper squid. Or there’s cock crab with flame-grilled brown meat; newspaper baked Cornish mackerel and beer-battered North Sea haddock, beef dripping chips, scraps and mushy peas on offer.
You can even order a ‘Mr Whippy’ ice cream for dessert, so your trip to this still rather gritty Farringdon Street can still end just like a day out at the beach.
Co-founder Alex Hunter says the new 82-cover restaurant will be a more ‘informal’ affair with a ’60s British seaside feel. We don’t recall the Fitzrovia original being all that formal to be honest!
