Veteran New York-based sushi master Masayoshi Takayama is the latest superstar chef who has agreed to launch an outpost at big-spending Harrods in Knightsbridge.
Born into a family that ran a fish shop, Masa did an eight-year apprenticeship in Tokyo’s smart Ginza shopping district before heading to Los Angeles, where his restaurant helped popularise sushi in the United States and was a big favourite of Marlon Brando’s.
Since switching coasts to New York City almost 20 years ago, he has won a series of accolades for his self-named flagship Masa, including three Michelin stars. A full omakase meal with ingredients flown in from Tokyo’s Tsukiji market at Masa’s hinoki wood counter will set you back over $1,000 once drinks are added to the bill.
Masa, who is now 68, will line up at Harrods later this year alongside international überchefs Björn Frantzén from Sweden and French pastry specialist Angelo Musa and home-grown British talents Jason Atherton, Gordon Ramsay and Tom Kerridge.
