Richard Caring has outlined plans for his most spectacular and decadent restaurant yet. Bacchanalia, in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, will channel the atmosphere of Ancient Greece and Rome, and promises to make his Sexy Fish, a near-neighbour, look like a vicarage tea party.
“Bacchanalia was a festival of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll,” he declared boldly – if not entirely accurately – in a long interview behind the Sunday Times paywall that previewed the new venture which is taking shape inside a former Porsche showroom. No opening date was given.
Caring (pictured with Bill Clinton and disgraced tycoon Philip Green in St Petersburg in 2005) has been buying ancient statues from Sotheby’s and Christie’s to display in the venue alongside four giant sculptures commissioned from Damien Hirst, whose latest exhibition featured jewel-encrusted faux relics ‘rescued’ from the Mediterranean by marine archaeologists. The ceiling will be based on the Sistine Chapel.
Caring, who made his first fortune in the rag trade before moving into restaurants in 2004, revealed the scale of his take-over of prime Berkeley Square properties, beginning with a £68m refurbishment of Annabel’s members’ club four years ago. It has another £100m worth of art on its walls by Picasso, Chagal, Modigliani and others. Mark’s Club, also founded by the late Mark Birley, is about to move to new premises in the square, and a new club, Isabella’s – named after Caring’s daughter – will follow soon.
Caring is busy away from Mayfair, and this month opened a branch of Sexy Fish in Miami, with a party for 800. He also has plans for a Middle East branch of Annabel’s: Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani – known as HBJ, the former prime minister of Qatar – is a fan of the London original and bought 25% of Caring’s business for £200m three years ago.
