As Thursday’s National Burger Day (Aug 25) showed, there’s no limit in sight to our appetite for tasty assemblages of grilled minced meat in a bun.
Now, in the spirit of Food Network’s ‘Man Versus Food’, the Heliot Steak House at London’s Hippodrome has launched the Big Time Burger – 2 kilos of USDA prime beef topped with 10 slices of bacon and 15 of Monterrey Jack cheese, four dill pickles and 500g of truffle sauce — along with, one is tempted to say “only”, half an iceberg lettuce.
The Big Time costs £70 and is – you’ll be relieved to hear – designed for sharing; greedy twosomes who can manage to ingest one in 30 minutes will be rewarded with a “Big Time” T-shirt to mark their achievement. Needless to say, this monster can’t be flipped in a minute: it takes an hour to cook, and must be ordered 24 hours in advance.
Meanwhile, at the daintier end of the burger scale, the annual Slider Decider takes place at Broadgate Circle on Saturday September 10, featuring 16 top chefs including José Pizarro, 2014 winner Tim Anderson of Namban in Brixton, and defending champion Adam Rowson, formerly of Pachamama, whose “Global Traveller” packs in an aged Basque beef patty with truffle aioli, wild rocket, balsamic onions, pancetta and gorgonzola. A £15 ticket buys you five sliders.
