The Five Fields in Chelsea will serve its final meals this evening, in a week when the original Hakkasan in Hanway Place also announced its closure after 24 years.
The Five Fields has been a consistent presence in the upper reaches of the Harden’s 100 list of the UK’s top restaurants in recent years, and in 2020 topped our London list.
The closure was announced in a social media post saying: “It is with heavy hearts that after more than 12 years we will be closing our doors with the last service this Friday 28th February. We are incredibly grateful to all of our guests for their generous patronage and support over the years, as well as to our dedicated suppliers.”
The restaurant’s senior team has been remarkably stable from the beginning, comprising (left to right in photo) general manager Matthew Widdowson, chef patron Taylor Bonnyman, head chef Marguerite Keogh and restaurant manager Sebastien Pe.
Matthew extended special thanks to Harden’s reporters for their patronage and support over the years, adding: “We haven’t had a chance to plan a next project, but I certainly hope that our paths will cross again.”
Hakkasan was opened by Alan Yau in 2001 and its fusion of modern Cantonese cuisine with nightclubby decor and vibes made it a huge hit. Acquisition by an Abu Dhabi investment outfit followed in 2008 and the brand was spun out across the globe, including a flagship nightclub in Las Vegas.
Fans of its classic dishes can still find them in London at the Mayfair branch off Berkeley Square.
