JKS Restaurants is to open a large and ambitious new Indian restaurant – their first in five years – in Mayfair this September. Ambassadors Clubhouse is taking over the Heddon Street premises occupied by Moroccan restaurant Momo until 2020, and will feature a ‘maximalist central bar with a gold dome’ in the main dining room.
The 140-cover Clubhouse will specialise in Punjabi cuisine, taking its inspiration and name from the summer house in the Dalhousie Himalayan hill station owned by the ambassador grandfather of founders Jyotin, Karam and Sunaina Sethi. It is the fourth Indian restaurant they have opened since making their debut with Trishna 16 years ago, followed by Gymkhana and Brigadiers (named after their other grandfather, a Indian army officer).
The siblings also founded Sri Lankan specialist Hoppers, and their company runs a bevy of other chef-led London restaurants including Lyle’s, Sabor, Berenjak, Bao and Kitchen Table. Five years on from the launch of Brigadiers in the City, Karam reckons the “time is right” for another high-end Indian restaurant.
“We’re in a strong position,” he said. “It’s a case of biding our time. We’ve had the idea for maybe ten years and we think there’s demand out there for restaurants such as these, and a solid market. Since the Nineties, these modern Indian restaurants have been popular in London. And more recently, it’s been important to shine a spotlight on regional food. We’ve been developing the menu for a long time.”
The Sethis grew up in London, but “we spent every summer in the Punjab, eating the food and learning about the culture, and this is inspired by all of that,” Karam added.
The Ambassadors’ menu will feature classic papads, chaats, kebabs cooked across the tandoor, biryanis, breads and karahis, while drinks will focus on tequila, mezcal and cocktails such as “Punjabi margaritas” made with Indian fruits and citrus and paired with masala-spiced salts – all the better to enjoy the 3am licence with music pumping from a DJ booth.
