Peckham’s Forza Wine, which started out as a supper club 11 years ago, is to take over a large terrace at the National Theatre as the South Bank arts centre consolidates its push to become a serious drinking and dining destination.
The 160-cover venue is scheduled to open on the theatre’s northwest terrace in September. It follows the May opening of Lasdun in the National’s main dining room, from the team behind Hackney’s The Marksman.
Forza Wine in Peckham is a rooftop wine bar-restaurant that wins high ratings in the annual Harden’s guide for its “interesting cocktails, an array of natural wines, plus small plates of delicious Italian-inspired bites”. It was a spinoff from the original Forza Win in Peckham, which transferred into larger premises in Camberwell Church Street last year.
Founders Bash Redford and Michael Lavery said: “The opportunity was a bit of a ‘pinch me’ moment – not only a world-leading theatre and one of Europe’s most famous Brutalist buildings, but also one of the best terraces in London. This is our biggest move yet, and we’re excited to bring the success of our Peckham and Camberwell sites to the South Bank, opening up what we offer to a wider audience.”
Huw Gott, co-founder of Hawksmoor and non-executive director of National Theatre Enterprises, added: “In partnership with Kerb, we’ve been working hard to build a food and drink offer that reflects the quality, care, craft, creativity and diversity of the performances on our stages. With Forza Wine joining Lasdun and a selection of Kerb traders at our iconic South Bank home, the National Theatre is set to become a London landmark for food and drink as well as theatre.”
