Pub to showcase beers resurrected from the 19th century

Revivalist brewer Jamie Allsopp is opening a new pub in Kensington next month, the Blue Stoops, in the next step of his resurrection of Allsopp’s, the brewery named after his seven times great-grandfather Samuel Allsopp.

The brewery was founded almost 300 years ago in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire – a world leader in the industry – and Samuel is credited with perfecting India Pale Ale for export to colonies with warmer climates, but the Allsopp name was dropped in 1959 following an amalgamation with neighbouring brewer Ind Coope.

Jamie, who made his fortune as a hedge fund manager, relaunched the Allsopp’s brand using old recipes three years ago, and has named his new pub after the family’s original Blue Stoops brewery in Burton-on-Trent. The pub has taken over the former Kensington Wine Rooms premises on Kensington Church Street, and will feature a menu of seasonal British food from chef Lorcan Spiteri (pictured with Jamie), founder of the Regent’s Canal floating barge-restaurant Caravel.

Jamie says, “It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to revive my family’s lost beers and I’m delighted to open our first pub in 90 years. Allsopp’s beers are incredibly drinkable, and they deserve their spot not just at the taps of The Blue Stoops, but in public houses across the country. As with any good pub, food is an integral part of the experience, and we are so thrilled to be working with Lorcan on the menu. He is rooted in British food, and is bringing a selection of true pub classics to our dining room”.

Jamie has installed custom-made ‘beer engines’ with swan necks so beer tcan be hand-pumped from casks in the cellar, as part of his mission to preserve a classically British form beer which is both natural and (through its probiotics) healthy. Three Allsopp’s cask ales will be on the bar: Pale Ale, IPA and Best Bitter, along with a fourth hand-pull reserved for guest ales.
