19 The Green, Exton, LE15 8AP
Owner's description
The Fox and Hounds Hotel is a handsome former 17th Century coaching inn that dominates the Green in the picturesque Rutland village of Exton. The building oozes character, with a number of fireplaces for cosy winter evenings and a pretty garden for lazy summer evenings. Privately owned, you can be assured of a warm welcome with every amenity to make your stay a pleasurable one.
The entire building has benefited from a major refurbishment and now offers four boutique hotel standard rooms. All rooms are ensuite, and are individually decorated and come with broadband internet, Netflix, digital free view, complimentary toiletries in the bathrooms and free parking.
Dining at the Fox and Hounds is a treat. Our kitchen is headed up by Omar Palazzolo (Nobu, Tom's Kitchen, The Arts Club), with some exceptional seasonal menus. The bar menu offers a quirky take on the British classics, from share platters to sandwiches. For more formal dining, the restaurant and deck offers Modern European inspired dishes. On Sundays, a traditional menu is served from noon.
Located 2 hours from London and 40 minutes from both Leicester and Nottingham, Rutland is England’s smallest county. Expect rolling English countryside, with Rutland Water only a mile from the hotel. Famed for its wildlife and leisure activities, including miles of walking and cycling paths, sailing and fishing to name but a few. Explore other local attractions — Burghley House, Barnsdale Gardens, Rockingham Speedway and Belvoir Castle. Local towns such as Oakham, Stamford and Uppingham offer a variety of unique shops, and no trip would be complete with a famous Pork pie in Melton Mowbray.

Summary
This “very smart and much-renovated old coaching inn” sits on the village green of one of the settlements bordering Rutland Water, and serves “high quality” fare in a cosy traditional setting.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
